Heads always turned when Rose McCarthy walked into a room. Nearly six feet tall, she was ramrod straight, and impeccably put together with faultless style, long graceful legs, her snow-white hair cut in a chin-length rounded cap. Her piercing blue eyes missed nothing. She could terrify anyone with a few well-chosen, soft-spoken, eloquent words, or comfort and delight a young employee with generous praise. For 25 years, she had been the legendary editor in chief of Mode magazine.

Summary
In her new novel, Danielle Steel tells a riveting story of the dark side of motherhood.
Zoe Morgan's childhood was marked by her younger sister's tragic illness, watching as her parents dedicated themselves completely to her final days, and then later divorced. As a young woman, driven by these painful memories, Zoe set the bar high for herself, studying hard and pursuing a career in the nonprofit world, where her deep compassion towards disadvantaged children finds a focus.
When Zoe falls in love and has her own child, she is determined to be a perfect mother as well. But before long, old scars long dormant begin to pull Zoe to the edge of an abyss too terrifying to contemplate. As Zoe is haunted by the ghosts of the past, her story will become a race against time, and a tale of psychological suspense that no listener will soon forget.

Brace yourself DS fans.....
This is the darkest and most harrowing of Danielle Steele’s books, and I’ve listened to them all. The narrator is excellent and the story is fast paced and gripping but a hard listen and joyless. So grit your teeth and prepare yourself and if you can’t face sad stories about children, give this one a miss.

The Dark Side review
I really enjoyed this book. I've been an avid reader of Danielle Steele for over 40yrs but this is my first audio book.
it is quite different to a lot of her other books but as it is based on a very serious subject, this is to be expected.
I would highly recommend it.

This is one of the best books by Danielle Steele in a long time. I have read/listened to all of her books, this is a change from her usual material, but definitely worth a read. I couldn't put it down, very realistic and a worrying theme. One of her best by far.

I was really impressed by this book!
The reality of child abuse is shocking. I find it hard to believe that mother's can intentionally harm their children. A very good book to read to know more about this tragic condition a mother can suffer from. The author Daniell Steel describes it so well.

A Very Dark Novel, Not a Love Story
NO SPOILERS!! If you think you know Daniele Steel, your wrong. When I first saw this book in the mysteries and thrillers category, I thought it was categorized wrong since she is known for love stories. I’m glad I didn’t pre-judge the book based on what her typical genre is.
This book was very dark and absolutely not a love story. The story built suspense throughout and I highly recommend it for those like me, who love psychological thrillers.
I hope Daniel Steel continues her writing about the darker side of human nature. I highly recommend this one.

Pretty good
I enjoyed this book enough that it kept my interest until the end. I thought it was odd how the whole first half of the book is written in third person and is all back story. I had a hard time getting into it because of this. I also felt like the ending contradicts everything we learn about the main character. I won’t go into this, as I don’t want to spoil anything for other readers,… but overall I am irritated with this book as a whole. Interesting, but irritating.
