About this listen

Ashcombe was the most beautiful house Saskia had ever seen as a little girl, providing a perfect sanctuary to hide from the tragedy which shattered her childhood. Now an adult, Saskia is still living at Ashcombe and, as a book restorer, devotes her days tending to broken, battered books. When she discovers a notebook carefully concealed in an old Bible, Saskia finds herself drawn into a heart-rending tale of wartime love....

A pleasant holiday read, read well. I did cry at a couple of points. I found Saskia mildly annoying. The past & present stories were handled well, paced so that both progressed & neither felt neglected.

Pleasurable listen, interesting and undemanding, if a little predictable. Would recommend for a relaxing read.

I loved this book from the start. The narration was excellent, perfectly suited to the characters and story.
The mix of historical and present day was pleasing.
I just wish Matthew had done something different with the house in the end, but you'll need to read it to understand, and maybe you will feel the same.

Will leave you with a happy heart

Good book, very much enjoyed, narrating excellent, loved how it changed from female to male voices as the chapters on time zones changed.
