Summary

Ashcombe was the most beautiful house Saskia had ever seen as a little girl, providing a perfect sanctuary to hide from the tragedy which shattered her childhood. Now an adult, Saskia is still living at Ashcombe and, as a book restorer, devotes her days tending to broken, battered books. When she discovers a notebook carefully concealed in an old Bible, Saskia finds herself drawn into a heart-rending tale of wartime love....

Lovely story nicely read

A really nice story. A bit predictable but what chick lit isn't? Likeable characters and very well read by Emma Gregory who has a lovely soothing voice. Recommended.

A pleasant holiday read

A pleasant holiday read, read well. I did cry at a couple of points. I found Saskia mildly annoying. The past & present stories were handled well, paced so that both progressed & neither felt neglected.

Enjoyable but predictable

Pleasurable listen, interesting and undemanding, if a little predictable. Would recommend for a relaxing read.

It was so good

I really enjoyed this book. It was written well and narrated well...
I like the fact that the sex that when on I'm the book it was referred to but it didn't go into details but very reader knew what was going on , I think that makes a nice change in books today ??

Gal's Own Romance, dustily

Suppose it is trying for intellectual historical novel but pulls off very reserved chicklit. Ok if you like that sort of thing and maybe you went to girls' boarding school to appreciate a sort of cosy propriety. Unfortunately the cliches in the language and descriptions defeated me by halfway.
The performance has a pace that suits it, it did send me to sleep effectively as bedtime reading - was it that i missed some drama? Decided not to hang in there any longer.

A Joy to Read/Listen!

Beautifully written, structured, and paced. Unforgettable characters. Brilliantly performed by both narrators. This is sincerely one of my favorite books in the genre.

My First Erica James Book

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it while in London. I have been to Bletchley Park
and really enjoyed the historical connection. The narration was good...had a little trouble with the male voice at first but the interesting story made me overlook the slight drawback.
Will get more from this author whose written books are not readily available in the U.S .
Thanks to audible for offering this English author to us stateside.

Nice story - just slow

Really liked the story but it just had a lot of slow moments. I would have cut the repetitive narrative by a third

Silly

Dreadfully soggy characters. The main narrator was good, but the secondary one was awful - sounded far too young for the part.
