James Oswald invites us back into his version of the Scottish detective story. He has created a niche inhabited not just by the usual scene of criminals and slightly neurotic cops but also bubbling just below the surface are constant instances of the supernatural. Occasionally the surface tension is burst and powers from the netherworld are seemingly unleashed.

In this the latest episode an incident from the beginning of his police career returns to haunt McLean. The story has everything we've come to expect from this series including the now familiar characters and plenty of twists and turns along the way.

Oswald still has plenty of momentum and his story is propelled along smoothly by the purring Ian Hanmore who manages to deliver the tension, macabre and even humour with equal aplomb.

Thoroughly recommended.

I bought this book on a daily deal and was unsure I would like it after buying another Scottish inspector thriller mid way through the series, which I did not enjoy.

As I said above it is not easy jumping into a series midway as you do not understand the principal characters fully, however this was brilliant.

Inspector McLean his life and the Scottish police he worked with were very believable and kept you wanting for more.

The supernatural spin was a complement to the new and age old crime being investigated. The story of McLeans everyday life woven through the crime story reminded me of the Michael Robotham series of Joe Mcloughlin, makes me want to listen to more in the series.

Lastly, fabulous narration by Ian Hanmore, his lovely soft Scottish accent made for a faultless listen.

Another great Scottish crime novel by James Oswald. iIlove the way there's a little bit of the supernatural interwoven through each of his stories. He really is a master of his craft.
