About this listen

FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW

THIS IS NOT THAT CRIME NOVEL

You know Johnny Hawke. Hard-bitten LAPD homicide detective. Always in trouble with his captain, always losing partners, but always battling for the truth, whatever it takes.

You know Penny Coyne. The little old lady who has solved multiple murders in her otherwise sleepy village, despite bumbling local police. A razor-sharp mind in a Sunday best hat.

Against all the odds, against the usual story, their worlds are about to collide. It starts with a dead writer and a mysterious wedding invitation. It will end with a rabbit hole that goes so deep, Johnny and Penny might just come to question not just whodunnit, but whether they want to know the answer.

A cross-genre hybrid of Agatha Christie and Michael Connelly, The Cracked Mirror is the most imaginative and entertaining crime novel of the year, a genre-splicing rollercoaster with a poignantly emotional heart.

This book doesn’t suit the audio format. There are far too many characters, I spent most of my time trying to remember who was who. Chris(topher) Brookmyre is a superb author, I’ve been reading everything he has written for 20 years plus. I need to buy this as a hard copy and go again. The male narrator was excellent. The female narrator was good at the Scottish stuff, bloody lousy at any and all American accents. She managed to make all of our American cousins sound like people who were in their prime as Californian Hippies in 1969, and haven’t looked back or stopped smoking herbs on any single day since. Very strange and distracting. Anyway, that was annoying and I still don’t really know what happened. Beautifully written though, as is everything Chris(topher) Brookmyre puts together. He’s a very clever man and author.

Confusing……

Loved every book Brookmyre has written. He’s constantly, brilliantly, stretches his storytelling range. This is another one to treasure

Great story
Clever plot
Excellent twists & turns
Good to see Mr Brookmyre doing well & building on his previous work - which I’ve greatly enjoyed over the years

Well written - CB doing his stuff!

Why is Sarah Barron the default Audible Scottish reader? She is as expressive as an automated station announcement; her 'male' voices are all identical; and her American and Australian accents are positively terrible!... Is there really no other British female reader out there who can actually act? I loved the story, and Russ Bain was a welcome relief, but the whole experience was seriously marred by this woman's performance.

Good story let down by female reader
