You're busy. But is the work actually under control? In most growing organisations, the felt loss of control isn't a discipline problem. It's a drift problem. Work starts clear and slowly goes vague. Owners are implied, never named. Decisions stall. And the surprises that land late were visible all along — no one owned the act of raising them.

The Control Standard is a practical operating standard for the people who keep work moving: ambitious operators, new and emerging managers, and the leaders who coach them.It shows how to convert uncertainty into something usable — an owner, a date, a decision, an escalation path, a fallback — so you become the person leaders trust with what matters.

Seniority is earned by making work easier to trust. You'll learn how to tell real control from mere activity, own outcomes rather than tasks, communicate upward so senior people can steer, delegate and coach without micromanaging, catch drift before it becomes expensive, and turn repeated pains into better systems, mechanisms, and habits.

The book gives you practical frames for the moments where growing teams usually lose control: vague updates, soft dates, unclear owners, stalled decisions, silent dependencies, repeated problems, and work that looks busy while quietly drifting away from the outcome it was meant to protect. If you manage people, it gives you a shared language for coaching ownership without becoming the bottleneck. If you are building your career, it shows you how to become easier to trust with important work by reducing uncertainty for the people around you.Grounded in 16 years of real delivery, not management theory.

Short, concrete, and built to hand from manager to direct report. For ambitious contributors, it is a guide to becoming easier to trust with important work. For line managers, it is the book you wish your direct reports had already read.

The Control Standard put its finger on a trap I've fallen into myself: mistaking a busy, active team for one that's actually in control. Drift, as the author puts it, is quiet and expensive, and growing organisations drift by default. What I appreciated was how clearly the examples showed ownership gaps opening up, work sliding toward the surprises nobody saw coming, and how it all adds up to a very real "drift tax," the time, money, stress and trust you lose without ever spotting where it went. I found it genuinely useful that it maps the seven places drift tends to hide, each a simple lens you can run over your own work, so every kind is easy to spot and address, and it doesn't stop at theory: there are practical tools that help you actually reach the standard rather than just read about it.

What stayed with me most is that this isn't about controlling people. It's about empowering them through real ownership, clear accountability and the honest, straightforward, useful communication that makes both stick, the kind that avoids the "so what" reaction you get from vaguer, less effective messaging. It left me thinking about how much easier work becomes to trust when people can act without being chased. To my mind it captures the ingredients that high-performing teams and organisations rely on across every function, improving results through genuine ownership rather than oversight. Nearly every concept felt immediately actionable, and it's an easy listen that rewarded a second pass. Genuinely one of the more useful management books I've listened to.
