Brilliantly written, the story flows beautifully and is reflected in the narration. Accurate depiction of the times in which it is set, good integration of historical fact and cultural trends and strong character development. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the series!!

There's a confusing start, talking about a murder which isn't actually the subject of this book. The author refers to characters from this other murder without clear explanation of who they are. Ironically, we are then told at least three times that the father of a character in this book is the "previous Lord Devine". This was author description, not dialogue to establish a character type. It's overwritten, with unnecessary adjectives and superfluous "he said", "she answered" where it's quite clear who's talking without them. It would have benefited from a thorough editing and proofreading. The clumsy sentence structures which might go unnoticed on a page are all too apparent when read aloud. There's an arch style to the writing, increased by the narration. I am afraid I couldn't get on with either. I will return this for a refund. The first time I have ever done such a thing but I really can't continue.
