Summary
When Apollo Kagwa was just a child, his father disappeared, leaving him with recurring nightmares and a box labelled 'Improbabilia'. Now a successful book dealer, Kagwa has a family of his own after meeting and falling in love with Emma, a librarian. The two marry and have a baby: so far so happy-ever-after. However, as the pair settle into their new lives as parents, exhaustion and anxiety start to take their toll. My new favourite LaValle novel
Mesmerising, great performance by the author. I think I’ll try to read (or listen to) everything he writes.

Dark fantasy, unusual storyline... it brilliant.
Don't hate me but I started off watching the AppleTV version. Although I thought it was good, it was also left with an odd and confusing 'cliffhanger'.
When a novel is read by the author it is always delivered exactly the way it is meant for the listener.
The story is definitely different, and delivered it such a great way that you are drawn in with the characters , backstories, folk tales, politics, migration, discrimination, magic, this book seems ro have everything.
Loved it, will definitely explore more f Lavalles book.

Struggled to finish it
unnecessarily long winded. unconvincing and naive. of course literature is a very individual beast but I have to say I prayed for it to end. the actual characters are good but the story just feels jigsawed, the language naive at points and the narrator a little monotone (audio book). I have a little experience of audio books so I don't think it was solely that. Sorry Mr author.
