It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

She finds herself in charge. She is not the biggest among them or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her.

Summary
Seven centuries in the future, the sport of American football has never been bigger, never been faster, never been more lethal. Trillions of fans from all over the galaxy watch six unique races battle in contests so violent that deaths are part of the stat sheet. Star quarterback Quentin Barnes has led his beloved Ionath Krakens to glory on the gridiron and become the most-recognized individual in history, but it is off the field where his world crumbles around him. Over four seasons with Ionath, he's picked up powerful enemies, one of which drove his sister into the Portath Cloud, a place from which no ship returns. Because his enemies include his team owner - a possessive crime lord who treats players like property - and the ruling government that controls the shipping lanes, Quentin and his friends must hide from the media spotlight as they search for a way to rescue his sister.
Set against the backdrop of a professional American football franchise seven centuries in the future, the Galactic Football League puts huge humans on the field with five alien races to create a game that is faster, stronger, and deadlier than anything we know today. Quarterback Quentin Barnes has grown from a racist, small-town standout into a proven leader, a uniter of peoples, and the Galaxy's most-famous athlete. Willing to do anything for his team, his Ionath Krakens have bound together through shared sacrifice, tragedy, devastating losses and thrilling victories. The GFL series melds star-spanning scifi, brutal crime fiction, and intense sports action into a smash-mouth extravaganza unlike anything you've read before.

Scott Sigler ups the GFL ante again.
Would you listen to The Champion again? Why?
Yeah when all 7 of the books are in I plan to relisten to it all back to back
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Champion?
Too many spoilers to be fair so I can't give anything away but there was a moment with uncle johnny and the gouger where I realised that the series was not being planned book to book but from start to finish of the series.
Which character – as performed by Scott Sigler – was your favourite?
uncle Johnny ain't he everyones.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I couldn't half way I was so angry with QBs treatment of uncle johnny I stopped reading for two weeks until I got my temper back.
Any additional comments?
Its darker and the feeling of slowly growing dread is palpable, slowly you fear more for the characters you care for which is a rare thing. But if you have not go from the start and listen to the rookie first.

Can't wait for book 6.
I had previously listened to every other scott sigler novel which were all great BTW., before attempting the Galactic Football Series.
For a British person not knowing anything about American football, I didn't expect to like this. How I was wrong.
What does the series offer?
Football, adventure, comedy, gangsters, love, death, aliens, war and intergalactic space travel.
Not only is scott Sigler a great science fiction writer but his narrating skills are awesome.
These books are well worth a buy which much more listening time than your average novel.

The Krakens Return
More of the boys own adventure that is the Galactic Football League. As enjoyable as ever although Quentin continues to be frustrating (he's a young man, sure, but he needs to stop being an impetuous dick) but ultimately a strong protagonist.
Plenty of story development as the Krakens make their bid for the bowl. Can't wait for the next one.

GFL Junkies, it's another winner!
Would you listen to The Champion again? Why?
I listen to it all the time. Work, home, in bed while I should be making sweet love my wife, it's always a good time to listen to the Dark Overlord.
What did you like best about this story?
It's easy to get lost in the GFL, I can't wait until it gets it's big break and sweeps Hollywood. I just hope Michael Bay doesn't take a hot steaming dump on it.

GEL us an excellent series
if you like football this series will be more interesting. But, if you don't I still recommend the read. the universe Sicker has created to.support the story's is very interesting. the info on the races and wars is very entertaining.
I actual wish the author should do a book about just the non football parts of the story. maybe for all the short pieces in the GFL series I to a single book, ending some more connective arcs and new facts and story's.
very entertaining. his Infected series is food too.
