Minutes after Sophie Kohl confesses to her diplomat husband that she had an affair while they were in Cairo, he is shot and killed.

Stan Bertolli, a Cairo-based CIA agent’s heart skips a beat when he hears the only woman he ever loved calling to ask why her husband has been assassinated.

Jibril Aziz, an American analyst knows all about a covert operation rejected by the CIA. So when it seems someone has obtained a copy of the blueprints, Jibril knows the danger it represents....

As these players converge on the city of Cairo a jigsaw puzzle of loyalty and betrayal emerges, where allegiances are never clear and outcomes are never guaranteed.

Critic reviews

"An elaborate, sophisticated spy tale; a long, twisty road full of cleverly placed potholes and unexpected turns." (Janet Maslin, New York Times)

I was in Egypt in 2011 at the time of the Arab Spring Revolution, so know exactly how things were ie no internet, banks closed, no planes, no buses, all the tourists gone not as portrayed here. This is a strange book where the female MC is supposedly an air head bimbo who marries a "diplomat (spy)" so she can travel the world, but after her husband's assassination, she becomes intelligent and inspired to investigate her husband's employer (CIA) with her lover, also a spy, who also doubts her skill and abilities outside the bedroom and attempts to block her enquiries. At 5 hrs in we've gone backward and forward in world history and it's all v v confusing with just one narrator. To add to the plot we find out Mrs Kohl and her husband are black. Whether this fact was salted in to ensure diversity I have no idea and think hieroglyphics easier to understand than this story.
