About this listen

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

I first read this around 1954/55 aged 15+. Probably one of my first grown up books and much impressed me at the time. I have read it a few times since and seen the Film a few times. I very much enjoyed listening to the familiar story unfolding. Some detail I had forgotten, many passages and phrases I recalled almost word for word.

Old Favourite Revisited in Audio

I’ve seen the film ‘The Caine Mutiny’ with Humphrey Bogart many times and I read the book when I was in my teens. I’d forgotten how much more there is in the book and that the story doesn’t end at the court martial. Many (many!) years later I’ve enjoyed this audiobook immensely and having worn a blue suit myself can identify with the characters and situations that are so vividly described. Not a spoiler but I see the complex Queeg through different eyes now. I feel rather mean docking a star from the performance which was really excellent but I baulked at a buoy pronounced boo-ey and the forecastle as just that rather than fo’c’sle which is what I and I suspect the US Navy would be more familiar with. A great story, a great performance (4.9 stars) and good value.

Much more than the film!

This was a good book. The good blend of WWII naval action, good characters, love, and courtroom suspense. It was also very even, no long dragging parts.

Quite OK

This story is brought to life by the fantastic narration, vivid and gripping throughout. Truly marvellous book an absolute epic and must listen

Excellent top draw five star

While this is a long story, I never felt bored and there were always little stories within stories throughout. Just wished I knew what happened after the book ends! But that's why we have imagination!!!!!

Excellent even if very long
