Summary

An unforgettable journey of discovery....

Federica is moved from Chile to Cornwall when her parents separate, and all she has left of the relationship she cherished with her father is a wooden box, which has a secret beauty hidden within. Swiftly embraced into the eccentric Appleby family, it isn’t long before Federica falls for her friend’s older brother, Sam, who barely notices the little girl until it is too late....

Years later, from the sanctuary of a seemingly perfect marriage, Federica embarks on a painful journey of self-discovery. Will she finally learn the true lesson of the butterfly box?

Soporific and nonsensical

The story starts slowly and grinds down to practically a full stop within the first chapter. The narration is dull but very useful in sending you off to sleep. I very rarely write scathing reviews on someone else’s attempt to entertain others through whatever medium, however, on this occasion, I felt it only fair to warn others. Save yourselves and save yourself a credit.

Took a long time getting there

I’ve read/listened to all Santa Montefiore’s books and she is a wonderful story teller. Somehow though with this i couldn’t get into the characters and it seemed like a long winded story recounting lots of separate events which didn’t really tie up with the main story line. It was an easy listening ramble but not her best for me anyway.

A Beautiful Story Portrayed with Excellence

The voice over actress is very talented and enriches this wonderful story in its telling. I highly recommend this heartwarming story that also has gritty, adult parts in it.

A lovely.....

storyline with some lovely characters in. Note to author you don't give milk to hedgehogs because it can make them ill they eat cat food. The narrator was good with using different voices for the characters.

Very slow moving story.

I normally love this author's work and I am "hooked" from chapter one. However on this occasion I had to give up at chapter nine. The story was grindingly slow and not remotely engaging.

Initially good but then predictable

I was hooked at first with the Binchy like narrative weaving lives together with detailed descriptions but by the end I was left cold. I was angry with most of the lead characters and felt no attachment or empathy for their life struggles. Ultumnately I thought it was sentimental, unrealistic and dissapointing.

Started off quite overwhelming but I fell in love

Right from the beginning I felt like I knew the characters well, and I put this down to the excellent descriptions of the characters. At points, I felt that maybe the descriptions and increasing number of characters was making the book drag unnecessarily, but as time progressed, I appreciated the need as it complimented the main characters development. Overall, I think I managed to guess the ending within the first hour of listening, but there were lots of unexpected twists along the way that kept me gripped.
This is my first book Montefiore and I've just started another. I Hope it's as good as The Butterfly Box
