'An excellent Golden Age mystery!' 🔎
'A wonderful one-sit read!' 🔎
'The bookshop, the London landmarks, the reverence for ancient Egyptian history, the museums, the questioning of the past... Wow!' 🔎
London, 1928. Lucy Darkwether has always made her own rules. After breaking off her engagement to pursue a degree in Ancient History, she's now the proud owner of London's newest bookshop.
So when a rival shop in Cecil Court is chosen to host an exhibition of Egyptian treasures, Lucy's pride is stung - until the grand opening ends in a gruesome murder. Is this the revenge of a disgraced colleague? A private vendetta? Or a curse visited upon those who disturb the past?
Ignoring the Inspector's warning to stay out of it, Lucy refuses to stick to the script. But murder isn't a game - and what she uncovers will have consequences for them all . . .
'Some of my favourite ingredients in any novel: a bookshop setting, a redoubtable heroine and a found family of misfits - even without the zippy plot, this fresh modern take on the period detective story would be a treat. I want more!' CATRIONA McPHERSON©2025 Genevieve Herr

Some of my favourite ingredients in any novel: a bookshop setting, a redoubtable heroine and a found family of misfits - even without the zippy plot, this fresh modern take on the period detective story would be a treat. I want more! (Catriona McPherson)
I did have the eventual culprit sussed out fairly early on, but that didn’t stop me enjoying the mystery. There were enough red herrings and unexpected developments to keep me questioning my theory and wondering if I’d got it wrong.
A fun, easy-to-read cosy mystery with a great atmosphere and plenty to keep you turning the pages. A solid 3.5 stars from me.
