About this listen

The BRAND NEW nail-biting thriller from NUMBER ONE bestselling author of The Wives! Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden and Lisa Jewell.

Helen wanted to believe the bookshop was a fresh start. But the past had a way of creeping in, whispering through the shelves, refusing to be left behind.

Helen Appleby just wants a quiet life. Recently released from prison for the manslaughter of her partner, she's trying to forget her past mistakes – all of them - to rebuild her life and move on.

When she decides to open a bookshop, she’s certain this is the perfect new start. Here, amongst the quiet shelves of her shop and between the covers of her books, she can hide away from the real world and begin again. The world of books is the perfect place to find happiness - even if it is all lies.

But the past can never stay hidden…

As she settles into life as an apparently timid bookseller, it seems that someone is determined to sabotage Helen's new life and ruin everything she's built.

But Helen has killed once before. And to protect her future, she could be willing to kill again...

Don't miss another page-turning, nail-biting read from the queen of psychological thrillers, Valerie Keogh!

I love Valerie's books and writing style. At times, Helen does seem too naive for a woman who has been in prison, but that is my only slight criticism. An excellent novel. Recommended.

Excellent book

I'm loving this new author, to me anyway. A real page turner, and the narrator is brilliant, bringing the characters to life and painting visual pictures in my mind. On to my 2nd now.

MMMM I TRIED A FEW DIFFERENT SPEEDS OF THE NARRATORS VOICE FROM 95/105 BUT IT WAS STILL REALLY WHINY AND WITHOUT ANY BALLS AND FOR SOMEONE WHO HAD BEEN IN JAIL WAS MORE KNIEVE THAN AN 12 YEAR OLD SCHOOL GIRL WHO HADNT DONE THE THINGS IN LIFE HELEN HAD. WAS STILL GLAD THINGS TURNED OUT THE WAY DID FOR HER THOUGH DEFINITELY NOT ONE OF VALERIE'S BEST

AYE WELL IVE A HEADACHE

From the very first page, the story draws you in with its intriguing plot and rich, well-developed characters. The pacing is perfect, keeping you hooked until the author weaves suspense and intrigue seamlessly, keeping you second-guessing at every turn. What really stood out to me was how relatable the characters felt – their flaws, emotions, and choices made the story all the more gripping. Valerie Keogh has such a gift for drawing readers into her world, and once I started, I genuinely couldn’t put the book down.

It’s one of those rare reads that stays with you long after the last page, making you think about the characters and their journeys. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that are clever, tense, and impossible to walk away from, this is a must-read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Highly recommended!
