Summary

A single murder. An unidentified animal skull. Sightings of a tusked horse. Flesh on the bones of an old Scottish myth.

A struggling Scottish scientist holds a potential unicorn skull in his hands. If he proves it’s authentic, his career will be made. If he dies trying, he won’t be the first.

Meanwhile, Gillan McArdle’s academic career is ending because of one stupid lapse of judgement. But he’s the most talented young archaeologist in Scotland, and a Dundee-based media outfit can use his skills. Offered a short-term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumors of a majestic tusked horse roaming the uplands, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. As he gradually unravels the mystery of the skull, he grasps one disturbing conclusion. If this creature does exist, the evidence suggests it’s a killer.

Fabulous

As a Scot I have always had a secret corner of my heart where the Unicorn, Scotland's emblem animal, has his stable. (My finger hovered over the pronoun of the animal's gender.) This story has enhanced my appreciation of the fabulous beast, to a degree I never thought possible. I will read and re-read this time and again!

An excellent listen!

I had seen this book mentioned on Facebook and it looked great but it wasn't available as an audiobook. I was delighted when I saw the announcement that it was now available. I really enjoyed the storyline and characters and the narrator was great too. I hope that there will be others in this series. Listened in a day, couldn't put it down.

Great Story, Even Better as an Audiobook

I was already a fan of “Bone Trap” in its written form, but the audiobook elevated it to another level. The story balances modern investigative elements with the rich cultural tapestry of Scottish folklore, creating an engaging experience from start to finish. The narrator’s voice is not merely a vehicle for the words but becomes a part of the storytelling, adding depth and context. It’s as if you’re there with the characters, navigating through mysteries both human and mythic. Moreover, the narrative takes the unique step of blending scientific reasoning with age-old legends, making for a thoroughly engaging listen. If you’re looking for a story that’s both contemporary and rooted in cultural depth, I highly recommend this audiobook.

One of the best listens of 2023

I listened to this with little idea of what to expect and was captivated by this book. For me, it goes down as one of the best books I have listened to this year which, given the number of books I have listened to (well over 200 now since 2020), is praise not given lightly.

The beautifully crafted narrative brings together the mythical with the scientific and allows the imagination to run wild. It’s a book that I kept thinking about even when not listening to it, and I think it will prove one of the very few that I will choose to listen to again for the pure joy it brought.

The narrator is perfect for this tale and delivers the story beautifully, without ever detracting from the narrative - instead immersing you in it even further. My huge congratulations to the author for such a compelling listen, I will be waiting impatiently for more from you!

I also have to add that, as a part of Clan McInnes, I felt even more connected to the story! Thank you for being this book into the world!

Outstanding!

OMG I absolutely LOVED this book! This is a book for anyone who ever wondered if unicorns ever existed.

The book is set on the remote Hebridean island of Harris, where our protagonist, disgraced archaeologist, Gill, goes to investigate an unusual animal skull which was found there. I was hooked right from the first chapter. This is an action adventure with so many twists and turns. It is well written and brilliantly researched, mixing science, archaeology and folklore. Several of the scenes took my breath away and I was tearful at times.

There is a whole cast of interesting characters which helped give the book some realism. I loved the wonderful descriptions of Harris and this book has made me want to go there.

Before reading this book I didn't realise how much unicorns were linked to Scotland, and that the unicorn is the national animal of that country. I really enjoyed the mysticism of the book with all the tales of waterhorses and Pictish beasts. I really can't wait for the rest of the series to come to Audible.

The book was beautifully narrated by Stewart Crank, and his narration helped me to immerse myself in this outstanding book.
