Summary

From whirlwind romance to gaslighting campaign: this is truth far stranger than fiction.

When Mary met Will Jordan online, she was a single mother who’d given up trying to find Mr. Right. And yet here he suddenly was: articulate and attractive, with a fascinating background. Soon they were in love, and when he proposed after a month it seemed recklessly romantic.

Caught up in a whirlwind, Mary accepted that Will’s work often took him away from home, out of contact. She was his rock, supporting him emotionally when a misunderstanding led to criminal charges, and even selling everything when blackmailers threatened to kidnap their children. Together, they took on the world.

And then one day the phone rang, and a woman introduced herself as ‘the other Mrs. Jordan’…

In this raw account of deception on a grand scale, Mary Turner Thomson recounts what happened after she discovered every word he’d said, from the very first moment, was a lie. This is her painful, humiliating truth - but she tells it for one reason: she too was once a strong, independent woman who would have read all this and thought It could never happen to me…

Revised edition: Previously published as The Bigamist: the true story of a husband’s ultimate betrayal, this edition of The Bigamist includes editorial revisions.

Shocking and informative

This is one book that I struggled to put down. It's almost unbelievable in parts, and there is a tendency to feel very angry at the author for what seems like her absolute unwillingness to accept reality. But I've come to the conclusion that this man was a consummate professional in his chosen career...that of a serial liar, thief, bigamist and worse. None of us can judge this lady until we have walked in her shoes. I wish her well & thank her for her courage in telling her story. Highly recommended.

Dreary story by stupid author

I feel really quite angry after listening to this.
The author is clearly troubled and this led her into an exploitative and abusive relationship but the level of credulity evinced in this tale is almost unbelievable.
Time after time she ignores the giant elephant in the room and accepts the incredible explanations of her bigamous husbands disgusting deceit.
I would be ashamed to have this published.

Absolute psycho!

This is like the true story of ‘Dirty John’ on Netflix...and then I realised that Dirty John was also a true story.

The story of a man who is multi time married and just trying to lie and cheat money out of women who just want to find love.

Crazy story that is so hard to believe...especially when you know it’s true.

Worth a read if you like true crime.

A must read for all women

This is a must read for women who having been raised on romantic stories may easily fall to the charms of a romance conman. Men in smaller numbers can also be victims. Here you have all the red flags that tell you to wake up and realise that you are under the spell of a sociopath.

Interesting story. Should have used professionals.

I thought this was a decent listen and a fascinating story. However, I wish it had been written and performed by someone else. The performance itself is really poor. Really flat with random efforts to be expressive. I also think it could have been written much better.

Just not my thing

Takes a much longer time than I felt necessary to come to the crunch. I feel I could have known just as much about this woman's plight in half the time.

Thought provoking

True story Gripping from start to finish. It make you realise how unsafe normal situations can be. If with the wrong kind of person. Hats off to MTT for sharing her journey. And for not being secretive or ashamed of the turmoil she has been put through. Hopefully a help for others in similar situations

iNDREDIBLE

I have often wondered how someone could get caught up in something like this. Especially now, as an anti-Trumper, how people could be so drawn and devoted to him. This was a very good book, for the most part she kept to the facts, eliminated the fluff. I now have a better understanding of the con-man.

RECOMMENDATION: READ IT.

Cathartic for the author

This work was clearly a catharsis for the author. For the reader or listener, this story could have been summarized in a in-depth article as opposed to hours and hours. It is amazing how one can put up with inappropriate behavior for so long and I do understand how people, especially women, can fall prey to men who lie and cheat while reassuring them with loving gestures along the way.

Well Written, Fascinating, & Informative

Mary's story is both heart breaking and uplifting. How she has managed to bring such positivity to her life after all she has been through is simply amazing. I applaud her for her strength to overcome and her selflessness in sharing her story to help others.

Amazing and Insightful!

I hope the author has profited from her experience with this audiobook.
This would make a great documentary and I’d encourage the author to pursue that possibility.
I am impressed by the courage of Mary Thomson in bringing this story out and would pray that she and her children will get by in life.
The author was the perfect narrator and it would have been terrible if someone else were telling the story.
Thank you Mary Turner Thomson!

Truth CAN be stranger than fiction!

Very captivating story! I really didn’t want to put it down, but kept getting interrupted anyway(!). Unbelievable story, but a true one nonetheless. Enjoyed listening. The author did an excellent job in narrating her own work.

Wow!

This astounding true story is intricate. intriguing, and nearly unbelievable.... unless you yourself have known a psychopath and/or a malignant narcissist. But it is tie and bully on Mary Turner Thomson for telling her story. First copywrited in 2008, this story continues to unfold as Will Jorden was also convinced in the U.S. in 2013....

The 2nd part of the book, interestingly also sheds light on the duping of an entire nation by a psychopath in the guise of an American President... What happened to Mary also had happened to about 25% of the US population!

in addition, Ms Thompson's elegance in dealing with raising her children not to be victims is a lesson we all can learn from. I'll be taking her tips from Chapter 16 about how to "abuse proof" young children to my daily work in a law office where we deal with predators and sex abuse victims fairly regularly.
