About this listen
“An extraordinary work of humane imagination . . . call it magic realism with soul.”—Locus
“Finely honed . . . always engages and frequently surprises.”—New York Times Book Review
A man risks his soul and his sanity to save his family from malevolent forces in this brilliant novel of horror and the supernatural from the award-winning pioneer of speculative fiction and author of the classic My Soul to Keep.
When Hilton was a boy, his grandmother sacrificed her life to save him from drowning. Thirty years later, he begins to suspect that he was never meant to survive that accident, and that dark forces are working to rectify that mistake.
When Hilton's wife, the only elected African American judge in Dade County, Florida, begins to receive racist hate mail from a man she once prosecuted, Hilton becomes obsessed with protecting his family. The demons lurking outside are matched by his internal terrors—macabre nightmares, more intense and disturbing than any he has ever experienced. Are these bizarre dreams the dark imaginings of a man losing his hold on sanity—or are they harbingers of terrible events to come?
As Hilton battles both the sociopath threatening to destroy his family and the even more terrifying enemy stalking his sleep, the line between reality and fantasy dissolves . . .
Chilling and utterly convincing, The Between is the haunting story of a man desperately trying to hold on to the people and life he loves as he slowly loses himself.
(And the audiobook reading is superb in itself.)
Horror at its best

The beginning of the book started off a little slow, with a few jumps in time but as Hilton is forced to deal with his choices and the after effect, and questions why these things are happening to him, the reader can easily place themselves at the crossroads he so often bares. Is it chemical imbalance, hoodoo or otherworldly forces?
You decide.
What would be your limit?
When is the threat to your family and yourself enough for you to make the decisions that 'They' are forcing you into.

First, the narration.
The narrator is really, really into it. He’s good, but at times it got a bit “much” for my taste. It fits the theme of opulent, operatic and theatrical, but at times it veered just a tad too far into “alright man chill out for one second and just describe what the man is wearing, if you please”. It works really well for the vast majority of the book however.
The various voices give such life to the characters, reflecting age, status and experiences as the book goes on.
The story.
It’s insane. I felt like I was in a fever dream for a large part of it, and I found myself spacing out at times and having to rewind just to make sure I heard it right.
It’s pretty slow at first, with a lot of world building and setup. I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters, as there are two stories being told at the same time, but towards the second half of the book I was fully onboard.
Overall.
The world is by far the most interesting part of the novel for me. I have never seen such an interesting world laid out before me in such detail, and the various parts and components fit together beautifully. It was once again quite difficult for me to keep track of everything at first, but I owe that in part to my not paying full attention to the story as I was doing other things as I listened. The longer it went on the more enthralled I became, and once again towards the end I felt as though I knew and understood all the ins and outs of the world and the characters.
If ever a book warranted a second read/listen then this would surely be it.
