Summary

Could the worst day of Sally Parker's life be the best thing that ever happened to her?

The deliciously warm and life-affirming novel from the much-loved Mel Giedroyc.

Sally Parker had a morbid fear of big social events and it was for this reason that she was crouching down low in the shoe section of her wardrobe....

Sally Parker is struggling to find the hero inside herself.

All she wants to do is lie down.

Her husband Frank has lost his business, their home and their savings, in one fell swoop. Their bank cards are being declined. The children have gone feral. And now the bailiffs are at the door.

What does an ordinary woman do when the bottom falls out?

Sally Parker is about to surprise everybody.

Most of all herself.

A big-hearted story of a family on the brink, The Best Things is a life-affirming tale of failing, falling and finding a way back up.

Critic reviews

"I enjoyed it so, so much - a brilliant cast of characters, pacey, engaging and properly funny!" (Graham Norton)

"This book is a riot! A larger-than-life tale of suburban avarice, downfall and the struggle upwards, it is delicious in its detail and had me wincing and laughing all the way along." (Sophie Kinsella)

"Mel's first novel is exactly like Mel herself: engaging, uproarious and gleeful. A stonking good read. Made me laugh.... Brilliant." (Jo Brand)

Expected better from Mel

I found this book an ok listen , mainly I was disappointed as it was written by Mel G as I find her so entertaining. So my expectations were higher. Especially after listening to an interview explaining that it had taken 12 years to develop.

Wasn’t for me

Mel was a fantastic narrator and I enjoyed the way she told the story however the plot just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Great book, love the storyline and the characters. It made me laugh out loud in parts and I wanted to know how it ended but didn’t want it to finish! Love Mel’s voice I hope she writes many more!

Disappointing, and time I will never get back

I was hopeful of a great in-depth story, looking at the relationships between the characters. Given the author’s script-writing experience, expected a high quality story of the Liane Moriarty style.
I was very happy to get to the end of this low brow pulp. It felt as if the author would have been better writing for children. I found myself wincing at some of the dialogue and the voices in the performance were irritating.
It was as if the narrative got lost somewhere along the way and it descended into “he said/she said”.
The writing came across as: rush, rush let’s get this finished, I’ve lost the enthusiasm as well as a plot.
I heard an interview in which the author stated she always felt she had one book in her, I hope that’s true.
Overall: A waste of my money and time.

Loved it

I loved how Mel brought her characters to life with her unique style of narrating and was willing Sally on. An enjoyable read (listen) and a good reminder that when life throws up a challenge, that's when we discover what we really can achieve.

Easy Listening but not amazing

Great performance from Mel but plot too full of stereotypical 'insert well-known brand and associated activity' examples which kind of grew old after a couple of chapters. build up felt too long and ending too short. but overall a good listen and I enjoyed the characters. just nothing to write home about
