About this listen

On the Mongolian steppes a general in the People's Liberation Army stakes his career, and his life, on a GPS-free missile guidance system that will change the balance of power on the battlefield. In Bath a young Chinese woman has secured the affections of a young brainiac working on that very problem. In Leamington Spa a deep cover operative has given himself away. And in London Jonas Merrick watches all, assessing, planning. A moment, perhaps, for him to strike a blow to China's espionage network in the UK. One thing he does not see, however, is in Moscow. An order given: 'bring me his head'. Tautly plotted and frighteningly authentic The Best Revenge cements Jonas Merrick as one of the great figures of modern spy fiction.

What an excellent paced novel. Its steady ratcheting up of tension, detail and plausibility made for a gripping listen. The performance was superb. I was truly hooked.

Brilliant

I really feel I have to rate 5* even though, embarrassingly, some of it I found hard to follow and understand. Rewinding and listening to sections a second and third time brought some clarity :( It is not the fault of the brilliant author if his superior intelligence is a little too much for me to process. I am a severe disliker of felines and in the previous three Jonas Merrick titles I have tolerated all references to it, forwarding when it became too much to listen to. However, the said feline in this title played a pivotal part and I was forced to endure more than I would have liked YUK. That said and once again, Ben Allen excelled as narrator - I feel that of all the brilliant narrators I have listened to over the years of my Audible membership, no other could do the job as magnificently as he. PS I hated the ending, I yearned for a tidy conclusion and did not want anything left to my imagination. Just hoping for book 5 to come swiftly along and put me out of my misery.

Superb.

Wow! Look at what is happening in the world right now. Drug dealer in France being broken out of a prison escort, three suspected individuals arrested on suspicion of spying for Hong Kong (read China!). You couldn’t make it up! Does GS have a crystal ball? Wonderful narrative, brilliant storytelling and superb narration. Thoroughly recommend.
