About this listen

The town of Bath offers ample opportunities for mischief - and romance Carolyn Hardy, determined to hold out for the true love promised in the romance novels she devours, has already broken two betrothals. Although she attracts the attention of many men - including the Prince Regent's brother - she knows little of their more unsavory ways, and resents the efforts of her guardian, elegant Sydney Saint-Denis, to shield her from them. To prove her mettle, heedless of any risk, Carolyn flirts more outrageously than ever, even with a gypsy prince. She certainly doesn't view Sydney as a potential suitor. In no way does the foppish man resemble the hero of her dreams. But she will learn that there's more to Sydney than meets the eye...The Bath Charade is the second book of the Bath Trilogy, which also includes The Bath Quadrille and The Bath Eccentric's Son.

I like this author usually but this is rather a silly story with a foppish hero and annoying heroine.
But even so I persevered and found the plot carried me along.
But the narrator is not at all suitable for a Regency drama set in Bath. An American accent with pronunciation of places like Reading (pronounced as Reeding when it should be Redding) set my teeth on edge. I will get the third book in the series and hope for a different narrator.

1. The reader has improved since the last book, but sometimes characters’ accents stray into the Wild West accident tally.

2. Trigger warning - the references and descriptions of Travellers are appalling repetitions of racist attitudes and tropes. They are also inaccurate in detail because in this period they did not have colourful caravans but tents and carts.

3. If you soldiered on through the turgid last book in dismay at the stupidity and unpleasantness of the main characters (who improved only towards the end) you earned this relief, because this one would be much better. It’s only
Let down by the racism which again makes the main character difficult to like or respect

Racist tropes about Romani people.
