Summary
Montana, USA
When Lance Spector quit the CIA, he swore he was out for good. One more government lie and he would go off the deep end. They could find someone else to do their dirty work. As far as he was concerned, Washington, Langley, the Pentagon could all go to hell.
Yekaterinburg, Russia
A secret Russian expedition returns with a devastating new pathogen, harvested from the frozen corpses of mammoths. It's the biological super weapon they've been looking for, an apocalypse-level pathogen, a virus more deadly than anything ever to come out of a Russian lab. Something that will stop NATO and the Americans in their tracks.
A Biological Chernobyl.
Washington DC, USA
A mysterious vial, sealed in a titanium case, arrives at CIA headquarters. They have no idea who sent it, but it comes with a note.
"I will only speak to Lance Spector."
The Asset by Saul Herzog is a stunning new thriller, a spectacular tour de force, a book that has single-handedly taken the publishing industry, and Hollywood rights departments, by storm. This dazzling debut kicks off the jaw-dropping new Lance Spector series, and sets the stage for a franchise that's on track to break all records. From the mind of one of the most creative and versatile writers working in America today, this book will go down as a classic of the spy thriller genre.
If you listen to only one book this year, this is it. Action, adventure, rebellion, provocative foreign agents, characters you can sink your teeth into. If you're looking for a new spy thriller series that will stay with you long after you finish listening, look no further.
Recommended for fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp, Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne, and Brad Thor's Scot Harvath.

Very well written
I really enjoyed the nook and as a result have downloaded the second. Credible characters that cross paths in a well thought through itinerary. Excellent voice and interpretation.

I couldn't stop listening to The Asset
I enjoy reading and listening to spy thrillers! I couldn't stop listening and reading The Asset! In fact, I stayed up all night listening to the audio version of the book! The storyline, characters, and the audio reader were all done to perfection for someone like me who is addicted to a well written story!

I liked it.
I thought the buildup to the story was great. The narrator is excellent. To me it seemed like kind of an abrupt ending but I’m starting the second book of the series right away.

Way too much
Lance is... you know the rest. A broken ex- blah blah blah. And he is the only one who can save the day.
The novel is long on set up; introducing key characters-shady spy masters, mysterious women, evil Russians. It's nothing we haven't seen before. The author provides tons of details and is clearly from the Tom Clancy school of storytelling, but sometimes more is just...more and not necessarily better.
The threat is real and propels the story forward, but the hang-ups of the characters and just overwhelming amount of back story really slow it down. The twists at the end are completely out of nowhere. Plus, there is the obligatory speech by the President about democracy and the sheer awesomeness of America that is so forced even this old airman rolled his eyes.
The narrator, however, was very good and kept me engaged.

Excellent start to a series
Enjoyed the book a lot. Liked all the characters and they were true to their characters through the entire book. Narration is so important and Jay Myers’s has a very smooth, likable voice. The story never gets bogged down. On to the next one which is The Russian. And thanks so much for the short commentary at the end. That was interesting as well.

Excellent book and narrator!
Wow! It was a good purchase, I really enjoyed the story and the characters. The protagonist Lance Spector is a tier one operator with a code. Great narrator as well. I’m on to the 2nd book!.

So cliché!
It is as a yes, author just graduated from spy novel writing school and this is his first novel. All of the characters seem to have been taken from other spy novels, and taken to the extreme. All interactions are taken to the extreme. Conversations are cliché. I am coming with you. No, you’re not, is dangerous. No, I’m coming with you. You don’t have to. No, I’m coming with you and that’s final! That kind of conversation happened at least 10 times in this book, and often with the same characters. The book’s namesake only takes part in about 25% of the book. It is necessary to suspend reality when you’re reading science fiction or spy novels, but there needs to be some kind of continuity in logic. That doesn’t occur most of the time in this book. I just don’t understand how people raided this as a good read. I wanted to quit just hours into the book, it was bad from the beginning. However, I paid for it so I kept on. But, when I got to the 13 hour mark and only had an hour and a half today, I just couldn’t take it anymore or.
