Adam Smith
The Adam Smith Collection brings together the seminal works of one of the greatest minds from the eighteenth century, expertly narrated by Ben Allen.
A pioneer of the Scottish Enlightenment, Adam Smith is celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to moral and economic thought – and nothing captures his intellect more brilliantly than the two classic works collected here. Discover Smith’s beliefs on morality – that human empathy is the key to all ethical behaviour – and how this acts as a fundamental underpinning of his later economic philosophy. Learn how free markets benefit not only the individual, but society at large; why justice is an essential virtue in all areas of life; and how the division of labour is vital for social mobility. Unmatched in its wisdom, and still just as relevant now as it was on first publication, Smith’s writing continues to educate and inspire.
The Theory of Moral Sentiments provided the philosophical and economic underpinning to his most famous work, also included in this collection. In this work, Smith sets out a foundation for a general system of morals where the greatest prudence, may lie in following economic self-interest in order to secure the basic necessities. This is only the first step, however, toward the much higher goal of achieving a morally virtuous life. Smith's ideas have resonated through the decades and he continues to inspire and challenge modern readers.
The Wealth of Nations is an economics book like no other. First published in 1776, Adam Smith's groundbreaking theories provide a recipe for national prosperity that has not been bettered since. It assumes no prior knowledge of its subject, and over 200 years on, still provides valuable lessons on the fundamentals of economics.
