About this listen

The characters in this extraordinary book are often - on the surface - depraved, vicious, cowardly and manipulative, but their essential humanity is never undermined. Two professors of philosophy turn pugilists; Leith removal men become the objects of desire for Hollywood goddesses; God turns Boab Coyle into a house-fly; and in the novella, 'A Smart C**t', the drug-addled young hero spins off on a collision course with his past.

The Acid House is a bizarre, disturbing and hilarious collection from one of the most uncompromising and original writers around.

Irvine Welsh is such a great writer and the stories are funny, intriguing, disturbing. Pity the Audible recording is such poor quality, it ruins the listening experience. The book deserves better than this. It sounds echoey, like it was recorded cheaply on a mobile phone. Worse though - half the short stories are missing! I thought there were 22 stories in Acid House. Only 12 recorded (its approx 2 1/2 hrs long). Its really disappointing. I remember reading the book years ago and there seems to be parts missing. No mention of it being abridged on the audio cover. I listen to a lot of Audible books and this has been the most disappointing to date.

Great book, terrible quality recording & half the stories missing!

i read the acid house when it was first released in the mid 90s and it was great to hear these short stories again after 25 years. they definitely hit a bit differently after all of my own life experiences during this time. it was unusual that irvine welsh actually narrated himself and in thought it gave the stories a certain authenticity.

a blast from the past

narrator was authentic but the quality was absolutely horrible, they had one job, to make it understandable...

Enjoyable narration by Irvin Welsh. Yes, the recording quality could be a bit better but it isn’t as bad as some of the other reviews suggest.

Enjoyable

The audio sounds muffled. It’s hard to hear, even though you can hear it. It’s like it was recorded on a laptop using the built in microphone. A very disappointing experience as I e read the book and know the stories are good. The poor audio quality really detracts from the enjoyment for me. I have tried various different ways of listening, but they all suffer the same flaw- it’s a really bad recording!

This is a poor quality recording
