About this listen

The Empire had fallen, and the Imperial Navy was disbanded leaving James with nothing but his nightmares to remind him of the role he once played in The Great War. James must now face his new life in a new era where science and technology must share the stage with sorcery and wizardry, and a new ever-present shadow of evil lurks over the remnants of the once great Empire. A new generation of warriors will be needed to fight this battle. James is determined to be part of that new generation and maybe find freedom from the nightmares that control his life.

I thought the first book in thsi series, The Enemy of an Enemy, had a lot of promise despite the fact that it was a very simple story with little depth, and I hoped that the sequel would be an improvement. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, and all the issues with the first seem to be magnified here. The story has focus, but even less depth, with the characters finding themselves in situation with no real threat, and always able to get out of them with barely an inconvenience. It's also frustrating that given the time spent getting things set up in the first book everything is almost pushed to one side so the timeline can move forward and this story be told. It also starts to wander ever closer to Star Wars, with similarities too great to really ignore. I'd like to say I'll try and get to the third in the hopes that it gets better, but I doubt that will be the case.

A disappointing sequel
