About this listen

The ABC of Relativity

By Bertrand Russell

Narrated by Gary McFadden

The ABC of Relativity is still considered today, nearly 90 years after its first appearance, as an authoritative and accessible introduction to Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

While there's nothing particularly easy about understanding the Theory of Relativity, many have found that Russell's explanation is easier to understand than Einstein's own writings on the topic. Russell covers topics such as time dilation and curved space-time, using non-scientific examples of train travel and aerial views of the terrain.

While Russell does a brilliant job in steering the listener with little knowledge of math or physics through the subtleties of Einstein's ideas, he still takes a wink and a nod at the complexities of Relativity in this quote near the end of his book: "The final conclusion is that we know very little, and yet it's astonishing that we know so much, and still more astonishing that so little knowledge can give us so much power."

Russell's is a lively and witty attempt to engage the non mathematician listener in some of the extraordinary ways of thinking Einstein introduced into Science. Unfortunately it needs a reader with the light touch and geniality of a Bill Bryson. This leaden delivery sounds as if it is being conducted by a machine!

Challenging read, defeated reader.
