About this listen

Set entirely on a London bus travelling from Hoxton to Highbury and taking place over just 36 minutes, the events of The 392 unfold through a cast of charismatic characters coming from very different worlds. On the 392 are all the familiar faces you might expect to see on any bus ride through inner-city London in the grip of gentrification; delinquent school kids, the high-flyers, the weird, the wonderful and the homeless. These Londoners share two things: a bus journey and a threat. A threat which is ready to blow apart everything they know.

Ashley Hickson-Lovence is a writer from Hackney, London. While working as a secondary school English teacher, he completed his MA in Creative Writing and Publishing from City, University of London part-time and is currently completing his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia. His debut novel The 392, set almost entirely on a London bus over just 36 minutes, was released in April 2019. His second novel Your Show is set to be released with Faber in 2022.

Have you ever taken a London bus?

Yes…

Read this book. It’s superb. Funny, rude, sad, intrusive, brash, racist, homophobic…

It stirs your emotions just by describing - what could be - an ‘everyday, normal’ bus trip.

I really enjoyed this book and I don’t get the bus. So worth picking up and reading.

Would definitely recommend.

A sad yet hopeful look into the psyche of the British public?

Just an everyday bus trip.

I listened to it one session. What a brilliant book. Getting the insight into people's lives and how interpretation of stereotypes can affect everyone.

Brilliant

Oh if we could read thoughts, would we love, dislike or understand each other more? Loved this so much, despite it not being my normal genre. Each character unfolded in a way that enabled us to know them better than we know those around us in real life. No heroes, no villains - just the beauty, ugliness, sadness and hope of normal human beings. The ending … well! Beautifully written, beautifully performed.

Absolutely Amazing!
