For fans of Karin Slaughter and Michael Connelly—justice has a cost, and someone’s willing to kill to keep the truth buried.

Officer Eden Mercer never backs down. With her loyal K-9 partner Shadow by her side, she patrols the fog-shrouded streets of Nightfall, Oregon—where danger hides in the most unexpected places.

When a young woman turns up dead at the base of a hiking trail, what looks like a tragic accident quickly unravels into something far more sinister. The victim had no history of drug use—so why was her blood full of methadone?

Eden’s search for answers pulls her deep into the shadows of Coastal Serenity, an exclusive rehab center with gleaming hallways and dark secrets. Beneath the glossy surface lies a web of corruption, insurance fraud, and calculated murder.

As Eden goes undercover, she finds herself drawn to a teenage patient caught in the same trap she once fought to escape—isolated, silenced, and dangerously alone. Eden knows exactly what it’s like to be a girl with no way out.

But someone inside the facility is watching her. And as her cover slips and the walls close in, Eden must risk everything to expose the truth—before another girl disappears, and the cycle begins again.

So we're now on book 6 of this series and they just keep getting better and better in my opinion. Whilst each book is an individual story, there is an ongoing story that runs throughout the series too.

In this book, Eden goes undercover and inadvertently puts herself in more danger than usual. She is moments away from death and poor Shadow is locked away and can't help. Thankfully, her work dad, Hanks has her back as always and comes to her rescue in the nick of time. Previously Hanks referring to Eden as kid annoyed me but as the series moves along it is becoming more apparent that it is affectionate rather than condescending.

It's nice to see the trio have made more progress with tracking down the cult and are getting closer to shutting it down. It's really frustrating though that Eden and Wilder are still skirting around each other, despite him bringing her a bunch of wildflowers and their obvious attraction to each other.

I don't think I have mentioned in any of my previous reviews of this series but the I think the narrator was the perfect choice for this series.

With a quote like “Yeah, and maybe consider a less dangerous career? Like, I don’t know, alligator wrestling or bomb disposal?”
you know you are in for an entertaining read.

Oh wow! I couldn't put it down and wished it had been longer, although not so sure my nerves would have coped. Shadow, Eden's K-9 partner wasn't in this book as much as he has been in previous books but that is because the rookie police officer goes under cover, he does play his part in a gripping ending that if I was reading the book version would have me skipping to the end to see what happens.

The story starts from where the last book left off with Eden, Shadow and her partner Hanks trying to get closer to the cult and the family members Eden left behind years ago. So while it helps having read the previous books, as you have a better understanding of Eden's background it's not necessary because they are soon called back to investigate a suspicious death. Then the rest of the story is taken up with Eden as she investigates a mysterious facility that is supposed to help addicts. The building and the situation is creepy and will have you questioning who she should trust.
I like the characters and the author will quickly have you worrying about them, as you become emotionally attached to them and there out come.

Eden and Hanks have finally found a way that might get them closer to Eden's lost family but before they can make a move they are called back for a suspicious death. A young admin worker at a rehab clinic is found dead at the bottom of a cliff, from an apparent drug over dose. Two things have Officer Eden Mercer and her partner Detective Hanks questioning the circumstances. First nobody who knew her believes she would take drugs and second the injuries to her dog. The more they investigate the more they believe her death was connected to her place of work but with everybody at the facility brushing them off they have no choice but to send Eden in under cover. Eden is an inexperienced officer and she will be doing the same job that might have gotten there victim killed. Can Eden keep her cover and find out what really happened? Or will the death get written off as just another overdose?
I like the narrator and she is one of my favourites.

I'm a fan of the series, and I was looking forward to continuing the journey by listening to this one. The prior book left us with Eden trying to find out more about her family, and we begin this book with her pausing that pursuit for now. Reality comes calling, and with a new murder taking place, she needs to return to her job.

We start the main story off by finding a woman dead on a trail. When details come to light, they do not resonate with what people know about her. It also turns out that the case is connected to another investigation. In her search for answers, Eden goes undercover, and I appreciated the slight deviation from our typical detective work, as it added an additional challenge for her. Was I convinced that she would do an amazing job? Absolutely. Was I concerned about her safety? Yes. I enjoyed following along on her journey as she put the puzzle pieces together.

Did her having access to all the data seem a bit unrealistic to me (as a corporate girly, I know a bit about access to sensitive data)? Maybe.
Overall, I enjoyed this one just as much as the prior ones, and as always, the narration was superb.

Another solid one

I have yet to listen to a book in this series that I don’t love. This one is intriguing and thrilling with riveting suspense and truly surprising revelations. A massive well-done to Hannah Somerville for her excellent narration.

A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.

Riveting suspense.
