September 1241. Robert of Hadlow, Templar knight, is on trial for his life.

Twenty years ago, his accusers say, he turned his back on his Brethren to join the army of the most bloodthirsty warlord the world has ever known – Genghis Khan.

Robert claims he was on a secret mission to bring the Mongol hordes to the defence of the Holy Land to aid its beleaguered Christian knights. But will he be believed? Or will Robert be condemned to a traitor's death – and bring the entire Templar Order to ruin?

From the endless grasslands of the Eurasian steppe to the burning sands of the Gobi and beyond, Robert recounts his extraordinary adventures with the Mongol army.

A tale of love and loss, tragedy and high adventure, of silent killing and the slaughter of thousands. And what a man will sacrifice to survive, serve his cause and save his family.

Angus Donald does a great job weaving real historical figures (Genghis Khan, his general Subutai) into the fiction without it ever feeling forced. It's got big battle energy but also real emotional stakes — you actually care what happens to Robert and the people around him.

David Thorpe's narration is solid too, keeps things moving even when it jumps between the courtroom drama and the flashback action.

If you're into historical fiction with a bit of grit, definitely pick this one up. Now just waiting on book 3!

Book 2 of the Mongol Knight series did not disappoint, couldn’t put it down, from Templar Knights to Genghis Khan, from Genghis to his trusted general, Subutai (who needs a book dedicated to him).
This is an epic story, the fact that some of the characters existed has given the writer a licence to thrill, which is done superbly. Loved it and will read it again before I get book 3 of the trilogy when it is released next year - thank you Angus, loved every page of it and the added historical notes 🤝
