Summary

Dresden, 1947: Im zweiten Jahr nach Kriegsende gehört die Stadt zur sowjetischen Besatzungszone und ist nach wie vor eine Trümmerwüste. Im klirrend kalten Winter wird das Leben beherrscht von Wohnungsnot, Hunger und Krankheiten. Kriminalinspektor Max Heller wird von der neu gegründeten Volkspolizei an einen Tatort in der Dresdner Neustadt gerufen. Doch bevor er mit den Ermittlungen beginnen kann, wird der tot aufgefundene Rotarmist vom Militär weggeschafft. Zurück bleiben eine gefrorene Blutlache und ein herrenloser Rucksack, in dem Heller eine grauenhafte Entdeckung macht: den abgetrennten Kopf eines Mannes.
