About this listen

A gripping, no-holds-barred account of war in the twenty-first century.

In 2006 Doug Beattie was awarded the Military Cross for his part in recapturing the southern Afghan town of Garmsir from the Taliban. He was due to retire from the British Army in 2007, when his CO made a desperate plea: stay on for one more tour. Torn between his love for his wife and children, and an overwhelming sense of duty towards his other family, the Royal Irish Regiment, in March 2008 he returned to Afghanistan.

The story of what he endured there makes for gripping listening. If 2006 had been hellish, then 2008 was off the scale. For six months Beattie led British and Afghan troops into repeated, exhausting battles with the Taliban. He took part in 50 major contacts and innumerable smaller skirmishes. Here he describes in detail the action-packed reality of combat on the front line.

An exceptional soldier who knows the horror of watching men die, Doug Beattie writes of the chaos and ferocity of war with the utmost honesty and humanity. This is essential listening for anyone with an interest in the armed forces and armed conflict, and anyone who wants to understand the reality of war.

This audio book must be listened too. It’s an unforgiving, graphic, honest and compelling book. This is honestly one that I will listen to over and over. Highly recommended.

Incredible. Essential.

What is there not to dislike? The story is an honest account of Cap’t Doug Beatties 2nd stint in Afghanistan & the battles he had to face both physically and mentally. Written with honesty & empathy it shows what a great armed forces we have & how much the training they do really can save lives! We naturally mourn all those lost in combat, even more so after listening to this book which describes, quite rightly, the horrific damage IEDs amongst many other things, can cause.

What the front line soldiers had to face

Heart warming and insightful account of the challenges that soldiers go through day-to-day in service to their country.

Truly wonderful and honest account of the challenges of war.

Your personal depiction of war was captivating. Made more so by your honesty about yourself and your humbleness towards your men. SF are very good at what they do but the green army regardless of cap badge are the absolute backbone. Your honesty about going back to what you know is something I have felt and yearned for for years also. Enjoy your family and the comforts of life.....you and your men earned it💯
