About this listen

For the first time, the great depth and diversity of Taoist spirituality is introduced in a single, accessible manual. Taoism, known widely today through the teachings of the classic Tao Te Ching and the practices of t'ai chi and feng-shui, is less known for its unique traditions of meditation, physical training, magical practice, and internal alchemy. Covering all of the most important texts, figures, and events, this essential guide illuminates Taoism's extraordinarily rich history and remarkable variety of practice. A comprehensive bibliography for further study completes this valuable reference work.

It’s very informative lots of history, how it’s based around your body the spirit and how you create bodily changes through chemicals in your body,

The author is clearly very knowledgeable and informed on the subject of Taoism. She is plainly a Daoist herself and therefore some religious beliefs, stated in a very matter of fact way, can come across as very silly (being proficient in internal cultivation can let you stare at the sun or literally bend your bones for instance). It's a very informative book and I don't think you could do much better in such a short listen/read but it's worth keeping the author's perspective in mind.

an interesting and informative book about Daoism

It covers a lot of areas and gives an impression of the scope of Taoism and its history. And it gives lots of further reading if you're interested.

But I would say that it's about 90% about the different religious beliefs and very little about the philosophy of the belief. It's got some history at the beginning but then it's a catalogue of religious beliefs. I was expecting more information that wasn't just about the supernatural. Also there are some parts that are impossible to follow, like a part which is just a big list of Chinese words, so I recommend skipping parts like that.

Almost entirely about the religion and not the philosophy

I would have enjoyed this book - which I thought was highly informative and mind-expanding, if a tad rushed and slightly inaccurate in places - hugely if the narration had not been robotic, monotone, and tedium-inducing almost to the point of tears. Frankly, I cannot understand why the narrator has a job as a voice actress. It may as well have been read by a computer. What a terrible shame and waste of time - I would have much preferred to have read it instead.

Great book, terrible recitation

As a novice of internal alchemical practises. I found the book to be an enjoyable and interesting insight into the practice. It both raises and answers some questions.

Pleasurable listen
