Summary

July 4th weekend, New York City: As thousands of holiday travelers make their way out of Manhattan, a flawlessly executed terrorist attack plunges the city into a maelstrom of panic and death. Amid the chaos, an elite team of foreign operatives is systematically searching for one of their own, a man so powerful that the US government refuses to admit he even exists and will do anything to keep him hidden. Now, with the world's deadliest enemy upon America's doorstep, counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath must fight his way through the burning city streets to take down an invisible terrorist mastermind with the means to unleash hell on a global scale.

Somewhat disappointing

I really like Brad Thor's Scot Harvath series, especially The Lions of Lucerne (amazing), Path of the Assassin, & State of the Union. While I mostly like this story, there were some holes in it that didn't get plugged and that I got hung up on - like the assumption that the murderous rescuer was just "gone" when there was still a no-fly alert over NY City. Really?? Seemed like there was no interest in tying up the lose end, so Scot simply resigned himself and gave up chasing. There were some 'whys' missing - like why did the troll even care about rescuing what's his name. What I particularly didn't like was the reader, who adopted a voice for Scot Harvath that was nasally and high - classically unsuitable for the competent, quick, smart thinking hero. He used a similar voice for the President Rutledge, that was nasally as well and with a rate of speech that made him seem incompetent and irritable, instead of steady and thoughtful even in the face of a monumental crisis. I stopped listening to Blow Back b/c of my irritation with George Guidall's narration. I'll give the next in the series a shot, but I don't know if I'll hang in there with the series if it's the same reader.

Takedown Review

I very much enjoyed this story. I read it in 1 day. I’m a fan of Brad Thor and have already read many if his books. I look forward to my next Brad Thor book. Great story, action and colorful characters.

Cliche ending

Over all I liked the book. However the ending was incredibly cliché. By ending I mean the last two or three lines. I won’t spoil it for anyone, but why do authors feel the need to end their books so stupidly.

Not the best Brad Thor I have ever listened to

The story was long (which I usually like) but in this case it just droned on and on with pieces that didn't seem attached to one another. It didn't pick up until the middle of the book so I spent quite a bit of time considering returning it. Then all of a sudden there was some action and then it returned to boring. It ended up on an interesting not so I will probably pick the next one up but if it isn't as good as the newer Thor books, I will probably stop listening to the older stuff. Guidall is a decent narrator but he is no Scott Brick. He does a decent job with characters and I would read something he narrates again but this book just brought my whole rating down. Hours and hours lost to a bummer of a book.
