‘Rebecca F. Kuang is about as accomplished as it’s possible to get’ VOGUE

First love. Second language. Final goodbyes.

The electrifying new novel from the literary phenomenon.

‘An unstoppable force in the literary world’ NEW STATESMAN ‘A prolific maverick with rare satirical wit’ GUARDIAN

Yale student Lily Chen arrives in Taipei hungry: for family, for culture, for connection.

But her summer of discovery quickly unravels. Her classes are grueling, her roommate unbearable, and a reckless, deeply awkward trip to the hot springs with a guy she barely knows soon ignites vicious gossip.

Then her grandfather dies.

Grieving and adrift, Lily must confront her own questions about the culture she inherited but never fully understood. She embarks on a wryly funny, often devastating search for understanding: of herself, her family, and the meaning of home.

All over one unforgettable summer in Taipei.

‘Kuang is sharply attuned to current mores, but prefers satire to lecturing – reminiscent, in this respect, of her fellow American writers Kiley Reid and Curtis Sittenfeld, who have also written wonderful campus novels. I loved this idiosyncratic coming-of-age story’ THE SPECTATOR

‘For fans of Sally Rooney and Coco Mellors’ COUNTRY & TOWN HOUSE

‘A sophisticated coming-of-age story’ SUNDAY TIMES

‘A timely, deeply moving novel’ GUARDIAN

‘Masterful and intelligent’ BBC RADIO 4 FRONT ROW

‘A sharp look at second-generation immigration experience’ GRAZIA

‘Wryly funny, often devastating’ SHEERLUXE

‘There is a wildness and freedom to her work that is extraordinary. Her characters are complex and human; nothing feels contrived’ TIME MAGAZINE

I enjoyed this coming of age story that captures Lily’s immersion in an intense language learning course in Taiwan. It was interesting to learn alongside Lily and the other students. It sounded like an amazing experience that took a lot out of the people who went on the journey, it was clear that the life long benefits far outweighed the short term energy drain. Kuang has such a great storytelling style and this was another joyful read for me.

Kuang does it again!

I really loved the stuff on language, family and culture; I adore this author in any mode. But I found the Gossip Girl style pyschodrama (for the middle majority of the narrative) a bit uninteresting and more Young Adult genre than the book’s marketing. I think it would be of interest to teenagers. The narrator shares a fair stream of consciousness worrying about what others are thinking or saying about them which I found a bit tedious after time, especially when the characters whose thoughts she was worrying about weren’t very redeeming. It’s a tough call to ask readers to worry about an unlikeable character’s opinion. Ultimately I think I might’ve missed the usual moral and intellectual depth that I’ve grown to love from Kuang. Her protagonists are usually characters I more rooted for. They also usually live in a more interesting complex world rather than a kind of thinner self-focused discourse around teen angst (characters self-focusing, not Kuang).

A bit more young adult vibes than Kuang’s usual ouvre

I really enjoyed this story about a student summer spent learning Chinese in Taipei. It was wonderfully evocative describing food, and also student travel experiences. I particularly enjoyed the performance, it really brought the language learning to life.

Engaging examination of heritage and language

This is my last kuang book. This book is flat a young girl’s 10 week language intensive in taipei. It’s nothing ground breaking at all. And to me not interesting
