About this listen

When Robin Matheson's husband is killed in Afghanistan, she feels completely alone in her grief. If there's even one small silver lining to Tav's death, it's the fact that she'll never again have to talk to his best friend - a 500-pound "forever alone" hacker. That's what she thinks, anyway, until her three-year-old decides Cyril is now his best buddy, and Robin can't bear to take anything else away from her son. Gradually, she begins to realize that Cyril is the one person who truly understands the magnitude of her loss. He also knows far more about her husband's death than he's been letting on....

I struggled to settle into this book at first however I am pleased that I did. This is an emotive and complicated story which is well written. I did find it difficult to be on Robins journey of grief as it really touched my emotions but that is truly a mark of how well written and narrated this story was.

It might be because of my own personal experience, but I felt very connected to Robins emotions of her husband going on tour and the narration really helped bring this to life again.

Coping with the loss of her husband, Robin "inherits" her husbands friendship with Cyril. A difficult man whom she tolerates for the sake of her son, and I think also as a connection to her husband whom she grieves for. This story explores all the different relationships between the characters. I really enjoyed the complexity and also how the story ended. I was left with questions, emotions and wanting to know what next! But I am also glad I don't know, if that makes any sense.

Overall thoroughly recommend, this is different to my usual listen / read but I wasn't disappointed

I loved this book. The characters were really relatable and coming from a military background myself I could feel the fear and emotions that she had with her husband always going off to serve. In this story after her husbands death she finds herself stuck accidentally with his best friend who for years she has not liked. As they are thrown together to help with her son she starts to discover things about her husband and questions around his death. This is a great audio well worth a listen and great narration.
