About this listen

Surprised by Oxford is the memoir of a skeptical agnostic who comes to a dynamic personal faith in God during graduate studies in literature at Oxford University.

Carolyn Weber arrives at Oxford a feminist from a loving but broken family, suspicious of men and intellectually hostile to all things religious. As she grapples with her God-shaped void alongside the friends, classmates, and professors she meets, she tackles big questions in search of truth, love, and a life that matters.

From issues of fatherhood, feminism, doubt, doctrine, and love, Weber explores the intricacies of coming to faith with an aching honesty and insight echoing that of the poets and writers she studied. Rich with literary references, Surprised by Oxford is at once gritty and lyrical; both humorous and spiritually perceptive. This savvy, credible account of Christian conversion and its aftereffects follows the Oxford liturgical calendar as it entertains, informs, and promises to engage even the most skeptical and unlikely listener.

Surprised by Oxford is a beautifully written and inspiring book which I cannot rate highly enough. I listened to the audio book (twice) after seeing the film and found it hard to put down. I loved the intersection of faith, intellectualism and romance.
Credit also to the excellent narrator of the audiobook.

A superbly written and uplifting memoir with the most wonderful hidden gift. Seek and you’ll find it.

Got me to travel to Oxford to discover the beauty of its colleges.

Excellently written book describing the quest for truth of an Oxford Postgrad student. I can’t comment in the American or Canadian accents but the British ones are not realistic. Overlooking that I highly recommend it to anyone with connections to Oxford, academia or Christianity.

Definitely worth the read!

This book is wonderful. I couldn't get enough of the author's experiences at Oxford and the shared, beautifully scripted, internal musings to which her time at Oxford led. An academic, the narrator comes to Oxford's esteemed halls to pursue a PhD; however, she finds herself pursued by a fellow Oxford scholar, TDH (Tall. Dark. Handsome.) and by God. TDH is a Christian, which gets Caro thinking about God, and God claims Caro for His own. The veil is lifted, and her life (as a Christian) truly begins.

The title, Surprised by Oxford, is a nod to CS Lewis's book, Surprised by Joy. CS Lewis, another Oxford scholar and teacher, also converted to Christianity. Lewis's experiences, words and work appear within Dr. Weber's text.

This book is beautifully written. The author is brilliant and her prose is captivating. If you are a believer, read this book. You will not be disappointed. If you are considering a relationship with Christ or entertaining stepping into a deeper relationship with Christ, read this book. It is a blessing.
