Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege.

Summary
A Nantucket woman returns home to find that reunions aren’t always simple, in this heartwarming novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Nantucket Wedding and Secrets in Summer.
“Nancy Thayer is the queen of beach books.” --The Star-Ledger
Keely Green always dreamed of leaving the beautiful shores of Nantucket to become a writer. Now she’s a bestselling novelist living in New York City, attending glamorous cocktail parties, mingling with the literary elite, and dating a charming pediatric surgeon. But a moment of clarity strikes when Keely’s boyfriend suddenly wants to settle down and her editor rejects her latest novel. With her personal and professional lives in shambles, Keely longs for the island way of life.
Growing up, Keely and her best friend, Isabelle, were inseparable. Nothing could come between them - except, as it turned out, Keely’s high school boyfriend, Tommy. Returning home means facing Isabelle’s bitter betrayal and seeing for herself the family Tommy and Isabelle have created, the life that should have been Keely’s.
But when Keely’s mother falls into a deep depression, Keely knows what she must do, even though she is reluctant to face her estranged friend. And encountering Isabelle’s older brother, Sebastian - Keely’s longtime crush - only complicates things.
In one incredible summer, Keely must confront the mistakes of the past if she has any chance of finding true happiness in the place she will always call home. Nancy Thayer shines yet again in this uplifting tale of forgiveness and self-discovery.

Easy read, entertaining but not great literature
Story line: Two best school friends love each other but become estranged for a long time. The reasons for this estrangement are rather cliché and lame. Tommy Fitzgerald invites Keely to a homecoming dance. Isabelle Walker has a crush for him She cannot forget Keely even though Keely declines.
Keely Green wants to be part of the wealthier and interesting Walker house and has a crush for Sebastian Walker.
During college, their friendship deteriorates further. Keely has to quit school for financial reasons. She works on Nantucket Island and gets back with Tommy.
Both girls want to be writers. Keely eventually succeeds. Isabelle doesn’t. When dumped by her fiancé, Isabelle turns back to Tommy and marries him. Both are unhappy and can’t make peace. It takes 19 chapters to reunite them
Nevertheless, the author knows her craft so that I was interested enough to get to the end

Ok
I'm struggling with my feelings for this story. The premise is a coming of age story, following two best school friends from childhood to adulthood. Having said that, the first eight chapters are completely the ground work of the friends growing up and at times the level of detail bored me. But, moving past to their college and then adult lives, the story did pick up. But, I was very annoyed with one of the main characters, Keely Green. She was jealous of her best friend Isabelle who was richer and to Keely, always had what she wanted. This underlying jealously was there through out the novel. And for me, it just added to my dislike of Keely. Her lack of majority, her need to compete and be better than Isabelle. It was like she blamed Isabelle for what she had and made her grown up decisions around that jealously. It only added to Keely's unhappiness and un-fulfillment in her life work and decisions. I was disappointed with the "happy ending". It was too predictable that they became best friends again and lived happily ever after.

Great Chic Lit
This was my first Nancy Thayer read, and I really enjoyed it. I will say I feel the title is a little off as this was not as much of a story of friendship as much as the story of women and her life. It does all wrap back around the friendship, but it was not the main focus. It was more in the distance, but wraps back around to them later in life. I thought this was going to be a whole story around the friendship between Isabelle and Keely. However; it really only follows the story of Keely. Isabelle was never a great friend to Keely and we only get limited details as we follow Keely from high school to adulthood. I actually really loved the story and was not a fan of Isabelle, so it all worked for me. Not much actually happens within the story, but I was still hooked nonetheless. I was just invested into Keeley and wanted to see how everything unfolded for her. This was a slow moving story, but I think you would love it if love a good chic lit read. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and look forward to picking up more from the author.

I wanted this to be good
I love Nancy Thayer and was so excited for this release. She definitely made me feel like I knew Nantucket even though I've never been, but I was so disappointed with the shallowness of the characters. I kept waiting for Keely to grow up and realize that from Jr. High on, Izzy was not real friend but a self-centered narcissist. The love interests were completely superficial based on nothing but the guys being good looking and making the girls weak in the knees - never mind Sebastian's stringing Keely along for years and Tommy leaving her on the spot after two years for her supposed BFF. Hey, they were good looking so that was enough to declare "love" and build a relationship on? Agh! I kept listening to the end hoping beyond all hope that she'd wake up and grow up and move beyond the whole dysfunctional lot of them to find happiness. I mean, beach reads are supposed to be fluffy, but this one had zero depth. So disappointing.
