A good read

Gerry comes across as a humble guy. To be honest I’d have preferred to have hear more about his competition history but all in all well worth the credit.

Brilliant

As a surfer myself I lapped this up. The narrator is wicked and Gerry’s stories are brilliant.

Could happily listen to it again.

Some great tales from the water...

As a surfer and starting my time it the water as Lopez is charging (to a lesser degree than I thought) big waves with Laird and his crew in the 90s. His name is one I associate with the best of surfing and surfers. So to hear his story and the development of the surf industry and culture was a worthy listen. Lopez is a humble surfer and the epitome of the old guard. The book is well read (although my L did think Campbell sounded a bit like Donald Trump) and the time keeps you involved in the tale.
Do you need to be a surfer or Waterman to enjoy the book......possibly not but the emotions and descriptions of the conditions will resonate deeper if you know from experience what Lopez is going through.
I will probably listen to much of it again.....soon.

Inspiring for lifetime soul sufers

overall the book is fantastic. if you're a surfer you know who Jerry Lopez is this is absolutely worth the read. the narrator is okay he does a decent job it's not over-the-top it's not really exciting but he gets the job done. if you're a surfer this is a must-read there's so much more here than just stories about surfing pipeline. Gerry Lopez is a fine human being I had the pleasure of talking to him on the phone one time it was amazing. just get this book it'll change your life in a positive way

Great story teller

This is a great story that keeps you thinking beyond just the story but about life. The only draw back is the narrator just totally destroys the Hawaiian words and Hawaiian place names that you cannot even recognize what he is talking about. Should at least practiced.

Epic story, Annoying narration

It is such a shame that Gerry Lopez did not narrate the book himself. It is such a personal story, it would have deepened the experience to have the author narrate. It was a distraction for the narrator to mispronounce words and to very obviously not be intimately connected to the content material. Bummer.

Listened to this three (3) times already! Superb insight to Surfing and Author!

Spans generations and through really fun story telling. Hawaii and all of the places come to life in ones mind. The sights and smells and glimpses of Surfing life can be and is... senes of paddling out into pitching ocean waves and great detailed descriptions of what it is like to participate in the sport of Kings.

Great for any age and I will listen to it again, as it transports me back to where we would all love to be.

The Wrong Narrator

Not a terrible narration, just the wrong guy to do a Gerry Lopez book. Gerry should have read it.

Great

Such a great book
I actually saw Gerry Lopez in Huntington beach on Main in the late 60s/70s.
How cool that was for a young surfer girl.
