Story
It is likely not terribly surprising that surfers like to party. The 1960-'70s image, bolstered by Tom Wolfe and Big Wednesday, was one of mild outlaws. Tanned boys who refused to grow up, spending their days drinking beer and smoking joints on the beach in between mindless hours in the water. As the surf brands accidentally morphed into a multimillion- then multibillion-dollar industry beginning in the 1980s, however, the derelict portrait began to harm business.

Fed up with teenage life in the suburbs, Jaimal Yogis ran off to Hawaii with little more than a copy of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and enough cash for a surfboard. His journey is a coming-of-age saga that takes him from communes to monasteries, from the warm Pacific to the icy New York shore. Equal parts spiritual memoir and surfer's tale, this is a chronicle of finding meditative focus in the barrel of a wave and eternal truth in the great, salty blue.

So, I’ve written a book. This certainly doesn’t mean that I’m quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it’s like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall....

Story
For centuries, mariners have spun tales of gargantuan waves, 100-feet high or taller. Until recently scientists dismissed these stories - waves that high would seem to violate the laws of physics. But in the past few decades, as a startling number of ships vanished and new evidence has emerged, oceanographers realized something scary was brewing in the planet’s waters. They found their proof in February 2000, when a British research vessel was trapped in a vortex of impossibly mammoth waves in the North Sea - including several that approached 100 feet.

Some great tales from the water...
As a surfer and starting my time it the water as Lopez is charging (to a lesser degree than I thought) big waves with Laird and his crew in the 90s. His name is one I associate with the best of surfing and surfers. So to hear his story and the development of the surf industry and culture was a worthy listen. Lopez is a humble surfer and the epitome of the old guard. The book is well read (although my L did think Campbell sounded a bit like Donald Trump) and the time keeps you involved in the tale.
Do you need to be a surfer or Waterman to enjoy the book......possibly not but the emotions and descriptions of the conditions will resonate deeper if you know from experience what Lopez is going through.
I will probably listen to much of it again.....soon.

This is a great story that keeps you thinking beyond just the story but about life. The only draw back is the narrator just totally destroys the Hawaiian words and Hawaiian place names that you cannot even recognize what he is talking about. Should at least practiced.

Epic story, Annoying narration
It is such a shame that Gerry Lopez did not narrate the book himself. It is such a personal story, it would have deepened the experience to have the author narrate. It was a distraction for the narrator to mispronounce words and to very obviously not be intimately connected to the content material. Bummer.

Spans generations and through really fun story telling. Hawaii and all of the places come to life in ones mind. The sights and smells and glimpses of Surfing life can be and is... senes of paddling out into pitching ocean waves and great detailed descriptions of what it is like to participate in the sport of Kings.
