We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Summary
From the halls of Montezuma...
Former Marine Captain Alexander Hale only wanted a weekend out with some old buddies. He could have done without the gang war, the shootout, and...oh yeah, the alien abduction.
Now he's in the middle of something he doesn't understand, never asked for, and is having quite possibly the greatest time of his life. Semper Fi and which way are the shores of Tripoli anyway?

Enjoyable but short.
I really enjoyed the book, and am hoping it gets expanded on. However, the book has a very slow buildup, however by the time it feels like it's really getting in the groove, it's over. I feel like the ending should have been the halfway point for a longer story. Definitely enjoyable, just hope more comes out.

It's an okay story.
I liked the "real world" aspect of this story. I didn't especially like that Alex turned into a quipping, generic super hero by the end of it. I would have preferred that he use the tactics and mindset he demonstrated at the beginning.
There were no real plot twists nor would I say there was any sort of emotional investment. So if that is what you are looking for, you are barking up the wrong tree.. I would recommend you read it the way you might read a standard issue comic book.
My last point is this: I get it. He's a Marine. He's a badass. Everyone who knows he is a Marine knows that he is also a badass. Stop rubbing my face in it and let Alex live his life without the constant reminders of his badass-ness. True badasses never need to advertise. True badass writers do not need to tell us that their main characters are badasses for us to know.

Really Weak Plot
Weak plot and 2 dimensional characters that were unimaginative stereotypes. The action was long drawn out and predictable. Almost 8 hours of wasted time.

Entertaining Generally
I liked superhuman... but I am not planning on continuing the series. It did not finish strong for me. The concept is good and the characters are likable but would have benefited from a bit more development. If you like superhero origin stories it is likely worth a listen. I like light fiction but it came down to me as a bit too light.

the set up for a good story is there but I think the first book ended too soon in the story. Earth doesn't know it is under an attack and Earth's scum is getting empowered. almost like how the Hero's TV show got hard to watch after the vilan got too powerful.

Not very good!
I’ve never once out of 315 books left a negative review. I respect any author who’s willing to try. If I don’t immediately like a book I will save it and come back later, to see if it will grab my attention. Often that is the case, even if a book is bad I can usually finish it. I tried three times to listen to this book. It was just plain terrible, I didn’t know who any character was, much less care what happens to any of them. I returned this book, that’s a first from me. I’m sorry if you read this Evan I really am. I congratulate you for
publishing and wish you the best. I just could not get into this book at all.

Takes a logical approach to super powers
Unlike most books with metahumans that sometimes take a comic step from reality. Evan takes a well thought out and unique method for gaining super powers. Alien probes are wandering the galaxy taking out organic life and enhanced the most violent humans it could find when it arrived and set them on a path of rampage.
And things happen from there, good plotting. With the author being Canadian, Iliked this line. "you know the worst thing about the Canadians?” Mickey asked. “What?” “No one ever suspects them,”

I was really excited to see another series by Evan Currie. Unfortunately this doesn’t come close to the odyssey stories. As soon as the women in combat 5 minute boilerplate nonsense started I knew I was in for it. I finished it just to see if it picked up. It did a little but there’s no there there.
