This is a 3.5 stars for me. To my mind, Lisa Kleypas’ writing is some of the best within the modern romance genre, but having read only her historical novels before, this is a bit of a departure in terms of theme. This isn’t a strictly HEA romance - the tied-up-with-a-bow-soulmates-type story - but that seems to be the point. It’s a HEA for the heroine in this phase of her life; it’s about the fact that lives are long and people are capable of loving more than one person. It’s about the fact that not everyone loves equally and you can love someone who doesn’t love you back. It also seems to be a bit of a parable about not losing yourself to a man who doesn’t love you enough to always put you first! Which is all great and all ideas which I, theoretically, agree with. But I still found this one disappointing at the end. There are 2 heroes - Hardy & Gage - who end up in the most polite love triangle the world has ever seen, complete with handshakes. The heroine does end up with the right guy, but because one hero appears so late in the book with scant character development, you never truly get to know him. So sadly the ending fell flat for me, despite understanding it.
