About this listen

Dom Joly has itchy feet. Again. He wants to get away. But, at the same time, something is nagging at him. He’s pretty sure he’s taken the country he lives in, England, for granted. As the 18th-century Italian playwright, Carlo Goldoni once wrote: 'A wise traveller never despises his own country.' But that was alright for Carlo. He lived in Venice.

Mystifyingly, 37.9 million visit England each year. Why? There’s basically nothing here. What are they looking for, and what do they find? Dom decides to try to find out. To do something he’d never considered before: to treat England as he would any other country. Surely there’s more to England than a slightly dull, green and pleasant land. Surely, it’s not just fish and chips, Shakespeare and the queen. Is it?

Maybe not, but there is one English cliché that’s definitely true: such miserable weather.

Joly is really laugh-out-loud funny. He has a very dry sense of humour and an hilarious 'puzzlement' at how the English do things. Really enjoyed hearing it. Enjoyed the nod to Bham.

Dom Joly at his best!

I absolutely loved this book. Lots of joy in 1 star reviews in the best Dom Joly delivery. Pretty sure it's better than the paper edition

Enjoyed this light and humorous outing.Been to most of the places mentioned and so was waiting in anticipation for Doms conclusions.Great minds think alike.Agreed with all of his conclusions or there about.Home is where the heart is and there is no place like home.”It says nice to go travelling but it so so nicer to get home.”

No Place like Home.

At first, I thought this would be a flat meander through already travelled English tourist haunts, but as I sat in the bath each evening listening to Dom (he wasn't in the bathroom with me by the way, that would just be weird, and anyway I'm quite sure I couldn't secure a bathroom gig for just one audible credit) I was soon hypnotised by the type of observational humour I've come to expect. I've been to a few of the same places mentioned and found myself chuckling aloud as he says what he's sees. I may also have been approached by the same American tourists....if only I'd thought about Pooh sticks myself. I'm away to get more Joly travel books..that's how much I enjoyed this one. But that's just me.

He told me to buy it, so I did.
