As a new dog owner of a shelter dog, I was looking for a guide to help me understand the special needs of my new family member and integrate him into our lives as best as possible.  I found the detailed steps for settling in and the insights into the behavior of dogs with often unknown backgrounds particularly helpful. I learned to better interpret my dog's small signals and to respond more patiently to his individual needs.

The tips for avoiding pitfalls are worth their weight in gold. You can tell that the author speaks from her own experience and truly knows what she's talking about. The audiobook not only gave me practical training tips but also helped me build a deeper bond with my dog. I've never had a dog before. My wife has and we want to get one but I didn't feel prepared enough, especially for a rescue dog. But having read this book I feel a lot more confident that I can give a dog a good home. I particularly liked the common mistakes to avoid section. I would definitely have made all of those mistakes so it was extremely helpful! The book also has lots of great advice around training your dog, all with special consideration to the fact that it is a rescue dog.
