About this listen
I'm Muse Harper. I'm a twenty-something painter who loves red wine, quirky movies, and men with fatal flaws. But that was before I met Jasper King. He became my fatal flaw. Eight months ago I had a choice to make - abandon everything I've ever known to protect my family or stay and risk someone getting hurt. I chose the former. My plan was working just fine until I found out my father had gone missing. That was when I met Jasper. A bounty hunter with the eyes of a tiger and the nose of a bloodhound, he was supposed to help me find my father. What I didn't know was that meeting him was no accident. Hunting people isn't all that Jasper does. And helping me was only part of his plan. I just wish I'd found out sooner, before my heart got involved. But even then, I don't know if I'd have done things differently. Now I have another choice to make - trust the man I'm falling in love with and hope he'll do the right thing or run as far away from him as I can get.

The chemistry between the MCs is good but established as a fact almost as soon as they meet - possible but again hard to accept. Muse's ability to see Jasper's inner man is nothing short of incredible, especially given the somewhat forceful nature of his lovemaking (though I couldn't accept it as such in the initial stages of their relationship). I found it hard to see many redeeming features in him at all at that point but then the audience doesn't have his physical presence before them to add to the impression of his actions and what he says. There's almost nothing obvious to love and apparently very little to build on.
Muse is not a strong woman in any other respect than that of being able to accept all the half truths she's been given and the demands for her to start new lives at points demanded by others, not decided by herself. She's bordering on the gullible. Living with a father who has clearly done some dangerous things in the past wouldn't normally lead to your daughter maintaining a very naive personality. Despite that, she's still likeable but not a strong presence. Overall, Jasper is the character who dominated the novel which makes the whole story rather unbalanced. Life happens to Muse - Jasper and other men make it happen.
The narration, imo, really improved the likelihood of the audience to remain engaged. C J Bloom and Joe Arden are two of my favourite voice actors and generally manage to turn mediocre plots into something to which I want to listen. In short, they have the knack of turning sows' ears into silk purses! This is the first novel by M Leighton I've listened to and, despite the best efforts of the narrators, I can't say I'll be enthusiastically searching out other work by the author. Though it's by no means the worst I've heard, it's certainly not amongst the best.
For those of us who enjoy something spicy, it is hot but again, not the best. There's lots of it and it's reasonably detaioed. What it fails to do is describe the tiny details of the build-up to an orgasm, for example. It's there but it's somewhat generic. In short, I didn't feel it.
This was free in the Plus catalogue when I heard it and I'm glad I didn't spend a credit on it. It's been deleted from my devices and it's not a title I recommend.
Thin plot; good narration; loads of spice.

The story doesn't flow.... The connection feels rushed there's not build up.
