Middle-aged, jaded and divorced, TV scriptwriter Harada returns one night to the dilapidated downtown district of Tokyo where he grew up. There, at the theatre, he meets a likable man who looks exactly like his long-dead father. And so begins Harada's ordeal, as he's thrust into a reality where his parents appear to be alive at the exact age they had been when they had died so many years before.

When jaded 48-year-old scriptwriter Harada visits Tokyo's old entertainment district where he grew up, he encounters a likeable working man who is the spitting image of his dead father. Lonely, nostalgic, and willing to believe the unbelievable, Harada follows the mysterious man, embarking on a bittersweet journey into the womb of a city whose living inhabitants have perhaps changed too rapidly and lost their souls. While the visits to his parents seem invigorating to Harada, his beautiful and strangely vulnerable neighbor Kei insists that he stop seeing them for his own good. A battle for the soul - Harada's, a tired city's - ensues in this thinking man's ghost story.
This surprised me. It reads as a tender love story and awakening. But as the narrative plays out things take a very dark turn. I have not seen the movie adaptation therefore I cannot compare, but I do recommend this audio and Geoff Sugiyama's narration is flawless.

A WELL WRITTEN DARK STORY

At times the chapters stopped abruptly and unexpectedly leading me to think this wasn't the whole audio. But it really is that short!
Very strange tale and at no point did it feel like there was a plot. The mystery wouldn't let me stop listening and I finished it within 3 days. Enjoyable but so strange and not sure it's the sort of thing I'd listen to again.

TBH, I oh picked the book because I loved the film so much. Wanted some answers, methinks. Since the film is loosely based on the novel I didn't get them, but I did enjoy listening to the story.
As I said above, beautifully told!

Beautifully narrated!

very different to the film but they are both excellent in their own way.
I love the way he writes, seems at first extremely formal but you start to pick up the emotion and feelings of the characters.
slight downside was the narrators tone did not change much for each character so not always easy to distinguish who was talking.

brilliant and you hung story

This book was unusually sad for me & very deep, having lost my parents very young It helped me imagine seeing them & being with them again. I had thought Kaye may have been saved at the parents accident & May have been his sister with the burns on her. It was very thought provoking &such a different kind of story. I was so sad when he had to say bye to his parents again. A really really interesting read. Thank You.

I enjoyed this very different book
