About this listen

In Barcelona, an aging Brazilian prostitute trains her dog to weep at the grave she has chosen for herself. In Vienna, a woman parlays her gift for seeing the future into a fortunetelling position with a wealthy family. In Geneva, an ambulance driver and his wife take in the lonely, apparently dying ex-president of a Caribbean country, only to discover that his political ambition is very much intact.

In these 12 masterly stories about the lives of Latin Americans in Europe, García Márquez conveys the peculiar amalgam of melancholy, tenacity, sorrow, and aspiration that is the émigré experience.

Loved this book of gentle short tales, some strange, some thought provoking, some humourous, we meet a women who asks to use the phone and gets more than she bargained for, an elderly courtesan finds love, and a pilgrim regrets her decision to leave home. All beautifully read.

Loved these gentle tales.

I wanted to listen to this book for the story "I Only Came to Use the Telephone", and that story didn't disappoint. However I think the best stories in this collection are the first: Bon Voyage, Mr President and the last: The Trail of your Blood in the Snow so if you were to think of the book as a sandwich - the best stories are the bread.

The best stories are the bread
