About this listen

Maybe ninety percent of the population of Dade County, Florida, have emerged unscathed from the devastating hurricane. It's the other ten percent that are causing the trouble. It seems that all the petty crooks and ne'er-do-wells in the south have converged on Dade to reap their ill-gotten gains from the chaos.

Honeymooners, Max and Bonnie Lamb attempt to record the goings-on with their video camera—but they soon wish they'd gone to Disney World instead...

Critic reviews

"Biting wit, wacky characters, and a profound fury." ( USA Today)
"These strange characters maneuver through a broken landscape as if born to it, and the author's control of both style and narrative keeps the novel from slipping into silliness....A fiction that explores the intersection of the grotesque and the human." Library Journal)
"Combining slapstick nightmare, black comedy, and moral outrage in just the right proportions." ( Booklist)

Well written and well performed, loved the interweaving plots & the building tension. It's difficult to pull off so many substories and keep them all interesting but Hiaasen pulls it off.

Pulp fiction esque & gripping

I love the story and learning about the Everglades and the depressing politics surrounding them

Good fun and in the usual Carl Hiaasen style. Well narrated. Good flow and easy to listen to.

Seemingly chaotic, seamlessly woven caper in the glades as wild as the weather. Greatly enjoyed the usual cast of Hiaasen misfits, conmen and innocent bystanders drawn large. Super pace and mindboggling plotting. Loved it. Surprising at times for present day listener to hear derogatory language but probably representative of its time.

Typically tropical Hiaasen caper
