Summary
Eduard, der schon lange in Südafrika ansässig ist, besucht noch einmal sein deutsches Heimatstädtchen. Auf der Rückfahrt schreibt er an Bord seine Erlebnisse nieder, vor allem die langen Gespräche mit seinem Jugendfreund Heinrich Schaumann, genannt "Stopfkuchen". Dieser lebt mittlerweile als Eigner eines Bauernhofes, dessen Vorbesitzer zu der Zeit, als beide jung waren, einen sehr schlechten Ruf besaß, weil man ihm einen nie aufgeklärten Mord nachsagte. Stopfkuchen hat sehr viel mehr von den Vorgängen in dem Städtchen mitbekommen, als Eduard anfangs erwartet hatte.
