Summary
In a remote Alaskan village, Deputy US Marshal Arliss Cutter searches for a stone-cold killer amid a hotbed of corruption, lies, and long-buried secrets....
Winter comes early to the rural native community of Stone Cross, Alaska - and so does hunting season. Caribou and moose are a major source of food through the long, dark months ahead. But Arliss Cutter has come here for a very different game. A federal judge is receiving death threats and refuses protection. Cutter and his deputy Lola Teariki have been assigned to shadow him on his trip to this icy outland to make sure that he's safe. But they quickly discover that no one is ever really safe in a place like this. And no one is above suspicion....
When Cutter and Lola arrive, the village is already gripped with fear. A young couple has disappeared from their fishing lodge, just eight miles upriver. Their handyman has been found dead, next to a crude drawing of a mysterious symbol. To make matters worse, a dense fog has descended on the region, isolating the town from civilization. With the judge's life still at risk, and two people still missing, Cutter and Lola have their work cut out for them. But navigating the small-town customs and blood-bound traditions of this close-knit community won't be easy. When the secrets come out, the deadly hunt is on....
Because in Alaska, nothing runs colder than blood.

Arliss Cutter series Book 2
I'm accustomed to the author Marc Cameron's Jericho Quinn espionage series as well his writing three novels in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, but I skipped the first novel in his Arliss Cutter police procedural series. STONE CROSS is Book 2 in the Cutter series. I had a very difficult time getting into Stone Cross and considered giving up several times. I'm glad I did not give up. Still, choosing between 3 and 4 stars was difficult.

More of this genre. please!
I'm not a big fan of military/spy novels as a rule. This crime novel set in bush Alaska is rich, suspenseful and satisfying... a real gem from an author usually writing Tom Clancy books. I enjoyed the well-developed characters, cultural and natural fabric, and all the subplots woven in. Not the least bit predictable, the story rolls along on its own path, much like the wilderness where it unfolds. The women were amazing and so were the dogs! Looking forward to many more.

NOT WORTH YOUR TIME
At 12 hours and 20 minutes, this book is entirely too long. Portions of the novel provided way too much detail in areas that were not at all essential to the story, causing it to drag and become quite boring at times. The constant comments outlining “Grumpy’s rules” were corny and insipid. The narrator did a nice job, as he usually does. Not recommended

Welcome to rural Alaska
Marc formes a fantastic job of informing the reader about rural Alaskan culture while providing a great manhunt story. The story itself is quite good, but finding out about village life was an added bonus. I think this story was better than the previous Arliss Cutter story.

Loved this book!
Cameron did a masterful job crafting this book. I was hooked from the beginning. Drama, suspense, action, and fascinating Alaskan culture come together in a book with multiple story lines that keep you eager to read the next chapter. Arliss Cutter is a rugged, rough and tough protagonist. What I also loved was the portrayal of the female leads in this story—every bit as tough! Thanks, Marc. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

This is probably the best book of its type I have read in years
Wow!! Not only was the plot great but it was cohesive and had wonderful character development. They were real people that showed concern and emotions and were not just killing machines. It exceeded my expectations and kept in involved from start to finish. Bravo!!

Grumpy Dog Gone
Love Grumpy Man Rules, Mim and the kids, Lola and the Alaska connection! What not to love? Arliss/MC needs to grow out of big brother's shadow and resolve his family situation. It is interesting BUT enough is enough. Arliss' talent for manhunting continues to be taxed due to his challenges of learning, and the reader also, the nuisances of being effective in an environment he isn't completely comfortable with. Keep it coming but work on AC's long term emotional stability.

Hated the Ending
I won't give it away. After everything the characters endured, it seemed gratuitous and mean. After listening to the whole book . . . then this! How was this necessary and what did it add? I think I had already gotten the message that life can be cruel and unpredictable. The ending ruined the entire book for me.

Felt like I was right there.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a bit gloomy, but so well done. I might have missed it, but I didn't feel there was closure regarding the death of the son. Still, overall, super. I'm a big David Chandler fan, so when I saw he was narrating, I didn't have to think further.
