About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Dr Shahed Yousaf is a prison doctor dedicated to caring for people on the margins of society. An outsider on the inside, in Stitched Up he introduces us to a cast of unforgettable characters, including killers, con men and auto-cannibals. To Dr Yousaf, they are patients first and prisoners second—because any one of us could end up on the wrong side of the law. He tells us honestly and compassionately what it's like to be their doctor in a system that's chronically overcrowded, drastically under-resourced and all too easy to ignore.

Dr Yousaf spends his time running between emergencies—from overdoses to assaults, from cell fires to suicides—with one hand perpetually hovering over the panic button. It's not a job for the faint-hearted. But while the system is failing, he and his colleagues are doing their very best to prop it up.

In stories that are frequently harrowing, sometimes humorous and always hard-hitting, we discover how difficult life is for those behind bars—but that there is still hope for all those who dare to care.

From a prison GP .Some interesting insights especially with the difficulties of prisoners and the reality of short staffing plus serious incidents....To note: EUPD was never known previously as "bipolar" personality disorder...it was borderline personality disorder. :-)

A snapshot of prison life

Well written and narrated book. I enjoyed it and found out a lot about the prison system and how a GP operates in that system. A chapter towards the end is quite disturbing, but I guess intentionally so. Recommended if you are looking for something a little different. I also liked the writer’s politics - warning us against the false narratives we are fed by governments.

Very entertaining and informative - recommended

I’m so pleased I bought this book. It was extremely interesting, thought provoking and horrific at times. Dr Y sounds like a wonderful person with all the right qualities to be a prison GP.

Sooo good. I’d love to meet Dr Y!

A very insightful account of what it is like to be a prison doctor. Riveting and shocking in equal measure. I couldn’t put it down. The narrator was skilled and sympathetic with the content. Highly recommended.

Brilliant and fascinating.

A great book, that's well narrated!! Kept me interested without being too long winded or giving not enough info! Narration meant you could really get into the different prison characters & the way it was written really gave food for thought! We need more people like Dr Y in the world!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!!
