Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Stick with It by Sean Young, read by Roger Wayne.

We all have bad habits - whether it's a weakness for junk food, a smartphone addiction or a lack of exercise. But change is hard. Forty percent of dieters quit within a week. Eighty percent of New Year's resolutions don't last beyond January. How can we kick bad habits - and stick with it?

According to psychologist and behaviour researcher Dr Sean Young, the answer is to stop trying to change the person, and instead change the process. In Stick With It, Dr Young draws on his own research and that of other leading experts to explain how the mind often interferes with breaking bad habits, and how we can outsmart it, increasing the likelihood of lasting change by 300%.

Packed with practical exercises and real-life case studies, Stick With It shows that it is possible to control spending, stick to a diet, exercise regularly and overcome problem behaviours - forever.

Critic reviews

Scientifically grounded and personally implementable. It's a winner (Robert Cialdini, author of 'Influence and Pre-Suasion')

Sean Young has taken psychology research and applied it outside the research lab, helping people make lasting changes to their behaviours. In this book, he shares a process and tools so that we can make these changes ourselves (Adam Grant, author of 'Originals' and 'Give and Take')

A must-read for anyone who's been unable to keep a New Year's resolution or failed at making a lasting change in any other area of their life or work. (Jonah Berger, author of 'Contagious')

Educational, Entertaining & Motivational

If you listen to only one book on behaviour change, make it this one. For once a behaviour change book that doesnt focus solely on habit and highlights the complexities of behaviour change. A brilliant and entertaining listen. Thank you

Life-changing

In short, this book has shown me that I am capable of achieving anything. If you apply all the techniques the author recommends you will change your habits. After all, we all want to be a better version of ourselves.

Some good points and some problems.

There are a lot of interesting concepts in here, some of which will be familiar if you've read similar kinds of works before, some of which will be new. It's got a lot that's interesting and will probably be valuable and useful particularly to people who are not familiar with this subject.

There were a few things that dragged it down for me though. The examples used to illustrate each point tend to fall into the category of "liberal heroes" which can be slightly tiresome, and the book tends to be a little long-winded in making some of its points. There's also some assertions that seem to stretch definitions a little. For example he spends a good part of one chapter asserting that the Milgram experiment proves we do whatever requires least effort: which is surely a little misleading given that Milgram's work was about analysing how people react to orders from authority figures that violate their conscience.

I will give the author credit however for trying to create a simple and easily recalled system for remembering and implementing his ideas and for trying to keep his suggestions practical and grounded, which is something sometimes lacking in books of this kind.

The narrator is competent and easy to listen to.

Inspiring to listen to.

A truly inspirational experience with sound background knowledge for each step to be taken. Humbled.

Extremely long-winded. Too boring to finish.

Haven't enjoyed this at all. Sorry was unable to finish. Story lines so long-winded, one started to forget the reasoning behind the chapter. Sorry
