Summary

Magic. Steel. Blood. Victory.

The Earth’s navy is left drifting among the stars as Nyctus ships swarm, their purpose unknown as they continue their advance, burning one system after another. Humanity's extinction seems inevitable. But on one of the forgotten worlds, a boy is left behind, and he holds a talent unlike anything the galaxy has ever known.

Thorn Stellers is a mage, trained to lead and fight. With a renegade division of warriors at his side, and with weapons far different from those of old Earth, Thorn has a chance at standing up to humanity's enemies. For these mage-soldiers, armed with power that had once been thought the stuff of legend, the outcome is no longer certain.

Each Starcaster has a talent - except for Thorn, who has many. With his childhood companion Kira Wixcombe, he’ll confront a threat from beyond the stars, meeting them in the darkness with a light born of magic...and a lust for revenge.

Is his power enough? Or is Earth a forgotten memory, lost forever to history?

Boring

Struggled to finish and gave up after 5 hours. The main character in the opening is presented as wise talking doesnt like authority type...but then without any reason given suddenly joins the space navy when asked. initially he shows that he's sense of humour and personality might not fit the navy but within a day he's completely changed. But the issue is I didnt really get his motivation of wanting or accepting that life, I'm not saying it's not possible it's just not explained. When he is essentially bullied, talked down to etc the initial impression of him is that he wouldnt accept it. additionally I didnt really like or empathise with any characters, they all seemed like robots all the time. maybe that was the point but the lack of humanity made it hard for me to really get into the setting and story. it was just training, punishments speeches about what it takes to be a soldier and repeat.

Gripping and exciting.

I can't say totally unique or completely original but definitely different enough to feel totally fresh. I definitely feel the hands of Chaney with the characters as I'm totally invested as usual, even the brief encounters. looking forward to the rest of the series. Also well read, the emotions and inflections of each character eloquently... imparted? I think I'm using that word correctly. well done all involved.

pointless and chaotic

The worldbuilding leans heavily on other sci-fi works but never states which works exactly. It is never explained how the sci-fi tech, magic, or this fictional society works or what exactly they are. Almost no term is explained, including acronyms like KEW. Plot is similarly chaotic with just jumping from scene to scene w/o any consistency or continuity. And in the end it is still a boring and generally predictable story of an omnipotent and boring protagonist.

Really solid book but doesn't sell me on series

This book is really well written, believable and actually treats military like it's the military, which is something all modern media fails to do.

Talking back to an officer earns reprimands and punishment, being emotional gets you killed and you gotta get over your comrades dying. It's immersive and makes sense.

Characters make sense and are well written, narration is great and if it wasn't for what I'm about to say next I would have already bought the second book so spoilers start here.

However the magic system is softer than melting butter and the main character is so insanely overpowered that the book 1 already answered the question : Will humanity survive.

Yeah it will, this one guy just destroys everything and huzzah we won. It's absolutely insane how quickly this guy goes from strong space wizard to borderline space god. The guy kills and entire space station full of aliens with his mind, game's already over for them.

Why would I want to read what happens next when I know he's just gonna get stronger and stronger, but it feels like this should be the finish line, not where book 1 ends.

My favourite type of book. Ability progression.

It was a force of will for me to turn this off and go to sleep. The story holds you enthralled for what next.
