About this listen

Captain Xander Hawk figured he'd stared down every cosmic catastrophe the galaxy could hurl—until the Malice Ascendant, a nightmare-class dreadnought engineered for planetary annihilation, shattered his illusions.

When a rescue mission spirals into an all-out galactic war, Hawk and his ragtag crew find themselves outgunned, outfoxed, and betrayed by corrupt politicians. Hunted by a relentless empire and an enemy that never rests, Hawk leans on his sharp wit, stubborn grit, and a band of misfits—including a wisecracking AI and a reformed conwoman—to flip impossible odds. But as stars explode and alliances crumble, he uncovers a fight far bigger than survival: one for justice, scorching revenge, and the soul-crushing price of true heroism.

In a cosmos choked by ruthless empires and shadowy plots, the only escape is straight through the inferno. Can Hawk's renegades ignite a rebellion, or will they become just another ghost story whispered in spaceports?

Blazing-fast, wickedly funny, and loaded with firepower, Starblade Rising is a clever, adrenaline-fueled space opera bursting with epic battles, indelible characters, and banter sharp enough to slice hulls. Ideal for fans of Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and tales where underdogs strike back—with nukes.

The worldbuilding is deep without ever getting bogged down, the characters are distinct and layered, and the pacing is relentless in the best way. I especially loved the political intrigue threaded through the action—this isn’t just mindless blasting in space. There’s commentary here, too. A story about justice, rebellion, and what it means to stand up when it counts. Highly recommend for fans of complex sci-fi with a human heart.

This audiobook hits all the right notes: action, emotion, humor, and just the right dash of chaos. From the first chapter, I was pulled in by the snappy pacing and the explosive opening. The crew of misfits feels fully realized, and I found myself especially drawn to the reformed conwoman and the morally grey dilemmas she faces. The battles are intense, but it's the emotional core that really hits hard. Bravo, Robins!

Sean Robins has crafted something truly epic with Starblade Rising. This is military sci-fi at its best—complete with fast-paced space battles, sharp dialogue, and unforgettable characters. Xander Hawk is the kind of captain you can’t help but root for, and the banter between him and the wisecracking AI had me laughing out loud. CJ Grey’s narration elevates every scene with perfect timing and emotion. I haven’t had this much fun with a space opera since Firefly or The Expanse. Can’t wait for Book 2!

There’s definitely a lot to like here—the core premise is exciting, and the main character is compelling. But I found the plot a bit too packed, with so much going on that it became hard to stay emotionally invested. The pacing felt rushed in places, and I would have liked more downtime to connect with the crew. CJ Grey’s narration is excellent, and I’ll probably check out Book 2, but I’m hoping for more depth and polish in the next installment.

This audiobook is an absolute blast—great action, lovable misfits, and lots of high-stakes drama. The pacing is fast, sometimes a bit too fast, making it hard to digest some of the bigger plot twists. But overall, the story is gripping, the dialogue crackles with wit, and the world feels vivid and dangerous. With just a little more breathing room, this would’ve been a perfect 5.
